More hospitals are lamenting discharge delays that are forcing them to house patients who no longer require acute care. The California Hospital Association has filed a lawsuit over the issue, and the Washington State Hospital Association says discharge delays are adding to financial pressures. Hospital leaders also say the situation is bad for patients.

The challenge isn't always available beds but insurance companies and the authorization process. In rural areas we are seeing facilities close at a rapid pace but that easier to explain to the patients than why the are sitting waiting on their insurance companies. Discharge planning has to start from day 1 and the initial plan should ALWAYS be home. Having a great homecare partner that can take high acuity patient is a must to help with length of stay and throughput.
