Right - after a lil social media break, i've turned it back on for work, and to remind all my Pompey peeps that it's local election voting day today and you NEED to take 2 mins out of your day to swing by your local polling station (with ID) and quickly vote. Vote for whichever candidate will best advocate for your needs, your neighbours, your community, and if none align with you, please just spoil your ballot paper, but please please please vote. Needs cannot be met without data and the more data the better. Consistently, approx. 30% of the City vote and 30% does not a full picture give. Need more volunteers to power your 2024 campaigns? I know a place where you can find lots of politically engaged, self-motivated people.... Primary election voting sites! If you're staffing a Democratic Party info table at the polls, PLEASE ask people to sign up to help elect Democrats in the general election! I also love this tactic for starting new organizing programs from scratch, for inviting people to organizing events, and for base building in support of specific issues. And I *love* talking about how to make the most of whatever capacity you have to recruit new folks at the polls - so ask questions in the comments or PM me if you want to hear more details! ps: You can even recruit volunteers while you're greeting voters on behalf of your favorite candidates (if they're cool with it), and holding on to people's dogs while they go inside to vote is a great way to get them into a conversation

On November 5th, we have the opportunity to exercise our right to vote. If you are not a registered voter but want to be, you have time. Visit vote.gov and follow the steps outlined there. This is not a political message, as I try to steer clear of all the noise in our current political climate. However, I would agree that this upcoming election is of significant importance. When determining who to vote for, please don’t base your decision solely on what you read on LinkedIn or other social media sites or see on the nightly news. I urge you to do your own homework and draw your own conclusions. List out the values that are important to you in a leader, as well as the priorities and initiatives that you’d like to see our elected leaders undertake. Do everything you can to learn about the candidates – visiting their website may be a good start. With a little work, you will be able to align your vote with the candidates who stand for what’s important to you. Remember, your candidates may not end up being mine, and that's okay. Let’s come together with thoughtful participation in our electoral process.

Today's tip: CHECK YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION! Your student says, "Yup, I'm registered." But are they? If students tell you they're registered to vote, make sure they include checking their voter registration as part of their voting plans. And you do the same. Many states have been "purging" voter registrations. Happy local democracy day, all! 🗳 The mandatory reminder to get out and vote today if you can (and to bring your photo ID). Local government and metro mayors are responsible for the services and investment that often have the biggest impact on our daily lives, so don't miss the chance to make your voice heard. As someone who has had a ringside seat for over 14 years of northern devolution, I'm especially excited about the results of the mayoral elections - the first time that every metro mayor in the country is up for election at once. As a Wakefield resident, of course I'll be taking a keen interest in the West Yorkshire mayoral election, but the other ones I'll be paying extra attention to are: ☑ York and North Yorkshire - today is the first time that residents of York and North Yorkshire will get to elect a metro mayor, responsible for £540m of investment in areas including transport, brownfield regeneration and net zero. York politics have always been a rollercoaster (I worked with Labour, Conservative, Conservative-Lib Dem and Lib Dem-Green administrations over a 10-year period) but the formerly solid Conservative North Yorkshire has also become much more interesting in recent years. I'm not a betting gal anyway, but I can't call this one... ☑ Tees Valley - I grew up in Middlesbrough and Teesside will always be the place I'll call home, so I'll be keeping a close eye on this mayoral race, which will be incumbent, Ben Houchen's, third run at re-election. He got a stonking majority the last time around, but concerns around the huge Teesworks regeneration scheme and Freeport, mass shellfish die-offs along the Teesside coast and the national political context mean third time might not be the charm for Lord Houchen of High Leven. ☑ Another first is the North East mayoral election. The North and South areas of the Tyne were unable to reach an agreement on a combined devolution deal for years, until the government put a deal on the table that all parties could unite around. The previous North of Tyne Combined Authority will become part of a wider North East Combined Authority stretching from Durham up to the tip of Northumberland. This is widely seen as a two-horse race between the incumbent North of Tyne Mayor, Independent, Jamie Driscoll, and Labour's Kim McGuinness, who currently serves as Northumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner. I suspect McGuinness will edge it, but Driscoll has amassed significant support after he didn't make Labour's candidate shortlist for the new North East role. Of course, today's hot takes are tomorrow's digital chip paper, and whoever ends up victorious tomorrow must turn immediately to the job of delivering for communities, bringing forward investment and fighting for their places on the national stage. I'll end with a shout-out to the many public servants who are grafting behind the scenes to make today's elections happen. You are the unsung heroes of our democracy! Social
