IF YOU WANT TO SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENT, DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT… Let’s face it, lawyers. We have all said it at one time or another. Law school didn’t help us learn how to practice law. Practicing law helped us to practice law. It does not have to be that way. There are law schools in different parts of this country that understand that. Ohio Northern University—Claude W. Pettit College of Law is one. Experiential learning is a corner stone of all they do. I am teaching my first transactional class tonight and I can’t wait. For more on what ONU law is doing, check out Deborah Solmor’s interview of Dean Charles Rose and my latest Above the Law article👇 about ONU’s collaboration with Laura Frederick and How to Contract . A recent study involving over 500 associates revealed a startling fact: nearly half believe that law school did NOT adequately prepare them for the realities of legal practice. 👀 Yikes! "When asked what they would change about their law school experience, the most common answer provided was more practical skills." 🤔 It might come as a surprise (or not) but years of theoretical exams—from the LSAT to the Bar—don't seem to equip future lawyers with the necessary tools for day-to-day legal work. Who fills that skill gap? Paralegals ✅ Enter our solution: the "Law School Lite" curriculum. Designed with a strong emphasis on practical application and approved by the American Bar Association, our graduates emerge with advanced legal knowledge + a robust portfolio of work product to evidence their competencies. We know what it takes to make a great paralegal. Future lawyers: you are welcome here, too. 😉 https://lnkd.in/ggJDbEjm #communitycollege #paralegal #aba #lawschool #law #highered #reuters

The King Hall Outreach Program (KHOP) 2024 Winter Session application deadline is a week away! Click the link to apply: https://bit.ly/3QAIhhM. Today's #StudentSpotlight features KHOP alum, Rudy Garcia '24. Rudy is originally from Santa Cruz, California and completed his undergrad degree at University of California, Merced. Throughout his time at #KingHall, he has been part of the First Generation Advocates program and the Latinx Law Students Association. 🔹 How did KHOP help you on the path to becoming a lawyer? I wholeheartedly believe that without KHOP, I would not be here today. I went into this program not knowing anything about the law school process. I knew I wanted to be a lawyer but didn’t understand how I would get there. KHOP and Joe Schneider (Director of Admission and Outreach), specifically, helped me figure out the entire law school process. I learned how to write my personal statement, how to study for the LSAT, and how to put my application packet together. Many of my close friends also participated in KHOP, and so not only did this program help me get into law school, but it also helped me get through law school. 🔹 What was your favorite part of KHOP? My favorite part of KHOP was the mock class taught by Professor Jack Chin. It gave me a small glimpse of what law school would be like. Finishing that class gave me confidence that law school was something I could pursue, and that it wasn’t completely out of my league. 🔹 Do you have any advice for students thinking about applying to KHOP? Apply. Don’t think about applying, just do it. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose by doing this program. Why not learn how to apply to law school from the people who see thousands of applications every cycle? #UCDavisLaw #UCDavis #KHOP2024 #FutureLawyer

Did you choose to attend law school because you wanted to change the system and ensure our highest courts look more like America? We know our students face barriers that can make them feel like they don't belong in certain spaces -- including the appellate field. That is why we started The Appellate Project. We are here to encourage, support, and empower law students of color so they know there is a place for them at the table. This work is even more necessary following the Supreme Court's decision on race-conscious admissions. In the wake of that decision, some of our students and alumni shared why the representation of all Americans in our institutions is more important than ever. If you're a law student of color interested in changing the face of appellate work, now is your chance to apply for our 2024 Mentorship Program. The program aims to empower law students of color to pursue appellate work by pairing them with two mentors in the appellate field, ranging from attorneys, judges, professors, and law clerks. We tailor these pairings as closely as possible to each student’s unique preferences. Beyond the mentoring, we also provide students with innovative and impactful appellate-focused resources throughout the Program, such as legal writing workshops, clerkship application support, visits to clerks in chambers, and conversations with judges. Apply here today, before the October 13th deadline: https://lnkd.in/e6TwdCzy #MentoringMatters #AppellateLinkedIn #nextgeneration

Meet Brian O'Loughlin Why did you choose Duquesne Kline School of Law? During the application process, I contacted the admissions office with two questions, one about how the Post 9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon program were implemented and another about a specific legal clinic that I was interested in. I received a comprehensive answer regarding veterans benefits almost immediately and was also provided with detailed information on other veteran support services available on campus. In addition, I received a phone call from the professor who instructs the legal clinic and he spent nearly an hour discussing the clinic and the overall program and culture of Duquesne Kline Law. This level of personalized service has continued throughout the program, with professors, administrators, and support staff getting to know and support students throughout their educational journey. What might people be surprised to know about you? I entered law school as a non-traditional student. I am a U.S. military service-connected, disabled veteran, who also worked in the civilian sector in healthcare and first responder roles. I have four young children (two girls and two boys) and two dogs. This non-traditional background and life experience has proven invaluable throughout law school. What advice would you give to incoming law students? Law school can feel like an overwhelming experience at first. It is very doable, even for those with young children. It is a matter of learning how to break this material into bite-sized chunks. Your professors are experts on the topics they are teaching. Do not hesitate to go to office hours and clarify your questions. These one-on-one meetings will clarify the issue and you may get exposure to other specializations and current research within the legal profession that you were otherwise unaware of. Questions? We are always happy to help! lawadmissions@duq.edu duq.edu/law #KlineLawDuquesne #Pittsburgh #DuquesneUniversity #LawSchool

President & Co-Founder of Women in Law Society (est. 2023) at the University of Reading | LLB Law Finalist
This week, myself and Charlotte Smith led our first PAL session with first year law students in Tort law! PAL (Peer Assisted Learning) is an academic scheme at the University of Reading, which consists of second and third year students facilitating the learning of first year students through student-led study sessions! The scheme is not just for LLB Law, and runs in other degrees across numerous modules too! Charlotte and I both felt that it was essential in our first session to build a comfortable and supportive environment where the students genuinely feel that they can contribute to sessions. Essentially, we wanted to create a strong sentiment that our PAL group is a team. We had each individual student create a mind-map summarising their main points as to what they thought PAL is, why they signed up for these sessions, and what they hoped to achieve by the end of the experience, and used these to comprise everyone's points into one big group mind-map to visualise and confirm our aims and expectations as a PAL group, and to keep these in mind as we progress through the term. The session finished with Charlotte and I detailing each session's structure, and asked the students what they would like to cover next time in order to prepare effective, interactive, and memorable activities! Being a PAL leader is such a brilliant experience - it is a great way to connect with other law students, to continue to hone my advocacy and public speaking skills, and to consolidate my knowledge of the law. #lawstudent #universityofreading #probono #volunteeringexperience #barrister #aspiringbarrister
