From Corporate Stagnation to AI Innovation: A Two-Year Journey September 2022: Bored at my consulting job in Menlo Park, seeing no path to modernize their old corporate playbook, I badly wanted change. The catalyst? Stanford night school in AI and the launch of ChatGPT that November. Tapping into my 1990s tech expertise in startups, I became my own best mentor. Over two years, the transformation was profound: • Resigned from my position • Founded my own company • Relocated to Texas • Began sharing knowledge with others Today, I stand as a leader in AI, armed with firsthand experience, deep knowledge, and a growing client base. Not only that, but our brilliant son Christian Burton is now my partner and co-founder of SAVANT-AI™. OpenAI just launched a new initiative to make its #GenAI tools more accessible to nonprofit organizations, an issue dear to my heart. Much of my work with my firm and the Duke Center on Law & Tech focuses on understanding and responsibly deploying emerging technology. And I worked closely with Legal Aid of North Carolina to launch its #Innovation #Lab last year, where we have been developing scalable #A2J solutions. I am constantly reminded of the William Gibson quote: "The future is already here—it's just not very evenly distributed." The "OpenAI for Nonprofits" announcement articulates the issue well: "Operational challenges, limited funding, and staffing shortages can often constrain their social impact." This is true across several industries and causes. In legal, we have a staggering access to justice crisis, with the Legal Services Corporation's most recent #Justice #Gap #Report finding that low-income Americans did not receive any or enough legal help for 92% of their civil legal problems.   While technology is not always the answer, this initiative could be a meaningful step toward enabling nonprofits to scale their social impact using the tools (and security!) our corporate clients currently enjoy. The Legal Aid of North Carolina Team has been working with LawDroid - Generative AI Legal Technology to develop and test its virtual assistant, and I remain optimistic that legal services organizations can effectively deploy AI tools.
