This is gonna rock a few boats. If Housing 1st programs cannot get with compassionate care, voluntary services and respecting the people they serve without bias for drug use or mental health challenges. Then, GIVE THE MONEY BACK. It's that simple. All the Housing 1st grants, shelter grants are all about Housing and care 1st. That means we have to work on ourselves as providers, unpack our biases, make an effort to learn more about these issues. It means we will have hard conversations with heart, that we will not push our personal/political, religious/work agendas onto people even if it means our numbers of success are low. Being mean to people, judging them, using rude tone is never going to help someone heal. Many who live without shelter have the most complex mental health and addictions issues and need a housing solution that includes adequate supports including clinical support outreach. Housing support for the most complex must include integrated, adequate and appropriate healthcare and social services. We're shedding light on a critical issue facing California, sourced from The New York Times. California's Proposition 1 is pivotal in tackling the state's homelessness crisis. With over 181,000 homeless individuals, comprising more than a quarter of the nation's homeless population, urgent action is needed. This measure, backed by Governor Gavin Newsom, aims to expand treatment centers and supportive housing, potentially providing a lifeline for those grappling with mental illness and addiction. Despite initial indications of overwhelming support, Proposition 1 is currently hanging on by a narrow margin, with just 50.5 percent of the vote. This close contest reflects concerns ranging from fears of involuntary treatment to fiscal considerations amidst existing budget constraints. However, with millions of ballots yet to be counted, the final outcome remains uncertain. As advocates for mental health and homelessness support, let's continue to champion comprehensive solutions and prioritize the well-being of our communities. The tragic story of Timothy Danzelman, who passed away in Plymouth, underscores the urgent need for systemic change in how we address homelessness, addiction, and mental health. Timothy was found unresponsive in the doorway of Plymouth's former Register Office just days after being evicted from his flat. Despite efforts from paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Yesterday's inquest revealed that Timothy had struggled with addiction and mental health issues for many years, and his death was attributed to respiratory depression caused by substance use. Timothy’s story is a stark reminder of the gaps in our social safety nets and the critical importance of timely, comprehensive support services. His family noted that he had been exploited by others on the streets and had long feared he would succumb to his addictions. He was a much-loved son and brother, known for his friendly and generous nature, but he often fell into the wrong company and was taken advantage of. As we reflect prior to the King's Speech, we are encouraged by the Government's commitment to reforming the Mental Health Act and the introduction of policies aimed at improving mental health services. The planned provisions, including the deployment of 8,500 specially trained mental health staff and access to early intervention services in every community, are steps in the right direction. Additionally, Labour's strengthened Renters Reform Bill, which aims to ban no-fault evictions and enhance tenants' rights, is a critical move to protect individuals like Timothy from homelessness. #kingspeech #newgovernment #labour #homelessness #mentalhealth

In the face of such sorrow, it's imperative to predict the positives that may emerge. The Safety of Housing Homeless people, like everyone else, need safety, which mostly comes from having a home to live in. People with mental illness or substance use disorder need treatment, which is by far more effective if the people have housing. And every member of our communities needs to know that we are all safer when everyone has a stable place to call home. Happy Reframe Friday! When working with high risk youth, both in the homeless serving sector, substance use, mental health and those involved in gangs, trust is at the core of supporting young people towards building positive assets. At The HUB, we know that trust isn’t an all or nothing concept. There is a continuum of trust  and  there is strategy in the process of breaking down the barriers to youth processing their emotions, both in moments of crisis and moments of peace. Often, we meet youth with their amour on, meaning their ego is driving their means of communication, and rightly so they have ultimate distrust in most people and systems as most or all have represented failure, hurt and family breakdown. Their egos have often kept them safe, and especially with young men, reaching a place where hurt and vulnerability can be exposed has never been supported. As we process these walls, they fall down and go back up as they move through their journeys. Each youth’s walls are different depths, making the timeline on letting them down case by case specific. As we move towards allowing the vulnerability wall down, we see correlation with building trust. As they move across the trust continuum, we see relationships deepen, harm reduced, and acknowledgment of harm caused increase. Giving time, patience, creative outlets and silence is critical to create opportunities for these unique individuals to let their walls down. We also know they often put them back up, and let them down again, as their ability to go deeper, build healthy emotional assets and practice the art of having healthy, cautious, informed trust with service providers and system players requires safety. Without an understanding of reasons for distrust, we miss the mark on getting to root causes of heavy substance use, street violence and cycles of homelessness and incarceration. Often these walls serve as a safety mechanism for youth in order to survive their current contexts. Trust doesn’t happen overnight, and certainly not after being forced through a formalized intake process, expected to share vulnerable details about your past and present circumstances. Letting youth guide their own intake process is critical, as they can test their trust, request different approaches and apply new coping strategies in the safety of their current context. #bedifferent #trustingrelationships #traumainformedsupport
