Building a New Generation of Builders: Susie’s Shed Inspires the Next Wave of Talent The launch of Susie’s Shed at the MCAC’s 81st annual national conference marks an exciting milestone for the construction and trades industry. Written by Ken Lancastle and illustrated by Michael Roy, this beautifully crafted children’s book is much more than a story—it’s a movement to change perceptions and inspire a new generation. Focused on showcasing the exciting possibilities of careers in construction, Susie’s Shed highlights a critical message: construction is for everyone. The book not only encourages young girls to envision themselves in the trades but also normalizes this vision for boys, tackling long-standing stereotypes from a young age. Innovatively, the book integrates QR codes linking to real-life examples of women thriving in trades, like Brandi Ferenc, a Red Seal refrigeration mechanic. This adds a tangible, relatable dimension, showing young readers that these opportunities are real and achievable. With proceeds supporting women in mechanical contracting initiatives and plans to expand the series across various trades, Susie’s Shed is a creative and impactful step towards addressing the labour shortage and fostering diversity in construction. How else can industries creatively inspire young talent and challenge outdated stereotypes? Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/g7ZUETVu #WomenInTrades #WomenInConstruction #MichaelPage

The construction industry faces a critical need for skilled workers, yet it continues to underutilize a valuable resource: women. My twenty years as a flooring installer have made it painfully clear that systemic biases and inadequate support structures hinder women's advancement in the trades. "Can You See Me Now?" confronts this issue head-on, detailing my own struggles and presenting a concrete solution: a comprehensive training program designed to empower women as trainers and transform how new entrants learn the trades. This program utilizes a blended approach of virtual and on-site training, maximizing efficiency and effectiveness while creating new opportunities for women in construction. My book is available on Amazon ($10) and if nothing else it opens a different perspective to increase the number of women in construction

Winner Alert!!! At last nights Women in Housing Awards WaMT won the award for best career development initiative for our 3:2 programme. With only 2% of women working in trades in construction, companies must harness the power and skills of women to help address the skills crisis within the construction industry. How do we ensure students studying to work in the construction industry go on to work in the sector once qualified? At Women and Manual Trades we recognise there is a real challenge retaining female students in the construction sector once qualified. The issues can stem from the reality of working in construction being very different to the dream. 3:2 is designed to secure students studying a trade paid work in the construction sector on the 2 days a week they have free from college. The initiative is designed to support more students to progress from full time college courses into work in construction by allowing the students to gain real ‘on site’ experience, building their confidence as they work towards final qualification. If you want to find out more about this unique initiative just get in touch with the team at wamt.procure-plus.com or contact us by calling 0303 030 0030 or emailing hannah.carty@procure-plus.com. #womeninconstruction.

We need more Women in Construction. According to the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), 250,000 additional workers are needed in the next 4 years to meet UK construction demand in 2027. Way off the target, with fears that the construction skills gap may turn into a crisis, more women in the industry could help fix the skills gap. The new pool of talent women could provide would address the lack of qualified individuals in the UK construction sector could make it challenging to fill positions, however women can contribute to narrowing the skills gap in the construction industry. Because of the shortage in the construction industry, those who wish to advance in labour and skills have plenty of opportunities to move forward in the industry. The slow but steady influx of women in the construction industry can help convince women that it is crucial to move forward and that there are opportunities for progression in the industry. A potential solution could be to increase the number of female construction workers in order to reverse the declining applicant pool and fill the gap. Solutions to these problems include investing in training, promoting diversity, and modernising apprenticeships. Improving the image of construction to include more diverse representation can be hugely beneficial. The construction industry needs to make the construction industry more attractive to potential entrants and to reach a more diverse pool of candidates. The ACQP are proud to support our women members who we encourage to rise above the gender bias and be the best they can be.
