Why lighthouses? Since moving to Northern Michigan in 2020, I have been fascinated by the symbolism of lighthouses, so much so that I now volunteer as lighthouse keeper at the Grand Traverse Lighthouse in Northport every summer. Lighthouses have long been rich in symbolism to the world, representing: - Hope and Inspiration: Providing light in the darkness and inspiring people to persevere through challenges. - Guidance and Security: Helping ships safely find the shore, protect them and provide a sense of security amidst life’s uncertainties. - Strength and Resilience: Enduring harsh conditions, overcoming challenges, and withstanding adversity.   As a Michigan soul with world traveling spirit, I am proud that Michigan has the most lighthouses of any state in the USA (115!), a strong symbol of my roots. Lighthouses have been part of my vision board for years, core to my decision making process and something that I want to share with you as I help you grow, innovate, and positively impact the world. I had the pleasure of attending the Automatic Gathering last week and left inspired. The Forth Hotel by New City Properties, LLC & Method Co. is an instant classic, and being surrounded by such a high-caliber group was energizing. Here are a few highlights: 1. As my dad has always said, if you can create real community, success follows. Across every panel—from developers to operators to capital providers—the emphasis on the need for community was clear. In a world that feels increasingly disconnected, this focus is clearly top of mind. 2. Homegrown, Sugarcoat, and Switchyards brought invaluable insights at the intersection of capital and brick and mortar retail services. Despite vastly different business models and real estate needs, these companies' growth stories reflects the grit and vision it takes to scale brick-and-mortar businesses. At Clay Cove, we are fortunate to work with operating partners that embody this same drive and determination. 3. With retail supply at an all-time low, tenants can be choosier than ever. I heard again and again that the best partnerships between tenants and building owners are founded on candor and mutual respect for the value each party brings—we walk this talk by building true partnerships with our operating partners. 4. Jodi McLean’s of EDENS concept of "discordant harmony" as a cultural framework for teams really hit home. It’s something we’re actively building at Clay Cove as we grow our team—balancing openness, respect, and constructive challenge. 5. This ones for the locals....Atlanta needs more active, equitable collaboration between the arts and development communities. Toni Williams' panel with Atlanta's cultural icons highlighted the importance of spaces where creativity thrives and Atlanta’s culture can evolve. The Goat Farm (TriBridge Residential) event last Saturday was a perfect example—let's see more of this! Excited to bring these insights back to Clay Cove Capital, where aligning the interests of operators, investors, and communities is central to what we do. How do you articulate something as complicated as research culture? Lengthy strategy documents? Word stuffed PowerPoints? Coffee fuelled consultation meetings? Not the most inspiring way to create a new vision for the research environment. St George’s knew they had to lead with something different. They needed something to simplify complexity, engage staff and students, and stick in hearts & minds. Together with senior leaders, we at Nifty Fox Creative helped to simplify the SGUL research culture story, boil it down into 4 core ideals and turn it into a rich picture that felt quintessentially St George’s. From the petri dish nodding to their biomedical expertise, to the sights of Tooting beloved by their students, we weaved the 4 core tenets of their culture into the visual fabric of the institution. The infographic, interactive version, and 90 second trailer are now being used to embed SGUL’s research culture vision university wide.
