What does the Just Transition actually mean? New Private Markets' recent feature dives into this important topic, with James Magor, Director, Sustainability at Actis, speaking to Charles Avery for the piece. James provided Actis’ view of what constitutes a Just Transition and the importance of deploying skills training to create employment opportunities for local communities near investments, especially given the fact that renewable energy jobs tend to emerge in different areas from thermal energy-related jobs. James provided the example of Actis’ work with Lekela Power and the skills programme deployed in Senegal as an example of how the firm has sought to invest in a Just Transition. Critical and impactful initiative that will help alleviate the energy poverty (in 2020 only 48% of SSA had access to electricity) and pollution (air pollution is the 2nd largest cause of death in Africa).
⚡ Expanding access to #cleanenergy in sub-Saharan #Africa has the potential to transform the lives of millions of people across the region. With greater access to reliable, renewable, and affordable power as a primary objective, we are delighted to announce the launch of the ‘Swarm-e Leave No One Behind: Bottom-Up Energy Transformation of Last-Mile Communities’ project. 💡 This pioneering initiative, co-funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe programme, aims to revolutionise clean energy access in sub-Saharan Africa to provide last-mile communities with decentralised, decarbonised, locally owned energy infrastructure. BwB is part of a project consortium, which includes European and African research institutions and private sector partners, that will work directly with local communities in Tanzania and Rwanda. "This project will employ innovative and impactful technological and financial solutions to an area of critical importance for improving economic and social well-being in sub-Saharan Africa.” commented Chris Smith, BwB Managing Director. “We are excited to get started with this transformational initiative.” Reginald Asare (BSc, MSc, MBA, CEIM) Shelmith Theuri, Wanjohi Theuri Gift Nhlane Violette Chanza-Santhe Alsen Ndaruhutse, MSc, MME, PMP®, Prince 2®, MEAL DPro Yves TUYISHIME Nehru Pillay Tomas Sales Danny O. Again, not in our investment portfolio, but as always, we celebrate any good impact investing and productive outcomes – especially when they apply to South Africa. The Nelson Mandela University's Development Studies Researcher Prof Janet Cherry recently posted an article about the R109bn Coega green hydrogen project. One of the biggest private sector investments in SA, this project will culminate in the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia for export, through the erection of its own solar and wind energy systems and a desalinator to harvest the brine water it needs to produce salt. The project will also be geared around an energy partnership with the metro where it will supply the city with surplus clean energy and the municipality will feed it into the grid when there is insufficient renewable energy available. Cherry, an activist in the field of sustainable and participatory development, said she was in favour of green hydrogen but only if it was linked to a local industrialisation initiative. #impactinvesting #renewableenergy #greenhydrogen #greenammonia #investments #sustainabledevelopment

The European Union (EU) has recently announced a new 1-billion-euro investment strategy to help secure vital raw materials for European industry and to develop green hydrogen technology from Namibian resources. 🌽💰💡 The strategy aims to secure resources such as raw materials - particularly rare earths - from Namibia in order to reduce the European Union's dependence on supplies from outside the continent. Furthermore, it is hoped that the investment will provide a major boost to the economy of Namibia, and the new strategy has garnered significant support from leading green energy stakeholders in the country. 📢🤝 Ultimately, the initiative is set to revolutionise the energy landscape in Namibia through substantial investments towards green hydrogen production and storage capacity. 🤩 This is a step towards transforming the European energy market and driving renewable energy supply in Namibia. 🌿#Namibian #EUinvestment #GreenEnergy
