Mental health hasn’t featured very much in this general election campaign, especially when you consider how important it is to voters and how important an issue it is. But it will be a major area of concern for the new #government, whoever that may be on July 5. And a big question will be how we can improve access to treatment for service users. In the first part of our three-part #webinar series on mental health waiting times, we looked at the importance of accuracy in enabling Trusts to understand the extent of their waiting lists more clearly. In part 2, which will feature Acumentice’s Michael Watson and Joanna Hillier, Chief Clinical Information Officer at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, the focus will be on how to manage waiting lists effectively, cutting the time it takes for people to be seen. The webinar will take place on Tuesday 23 July at 12pm, and you can sign up for your space here: https://lnkd.in/eNuAmZFp

mental healthcare that’s developed in recent years. Whatever the reasons — and there are many — Americans are frustrated with the lack of help, as a severe shortage of therapists leaves many people with no obvious treatment options. In a new survey of US adults, three-fourths say the mental healthcare system is worse than the physical healthcare system. That’s a bit like saying rotten apples are worse than rotten oranges, in a country that ranks pitifully in healthcare effectiveness compared to other advanced nations and has the lowest life expectancy among comparable countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Japan and the UK. It’s gotten so bad that more than half of respondents graded the US healthcare system’s handling of mental health conditions with a D or an F, according the survey by Gallup for the West Health Institute, a nonprofit that advocates for better healthcare for aging Americans. https://lnkd.in/dxSbjX2A

We know that we need to address the “pair of aces” by building community well-being, interdependence, resilience, and safety. Community based solutions for complex problems is a thread I’m hearing today. What belongs at the state level and what can be embedded and funded in the community?
Oregon Health and Education Collaborative Executive Director Chelsea King is attending the State of Reform Health Policy Conference, participating in conversation about substance use disorder, houselessness, mental health crisis and healthcare workforce issues. The issues are complex and it’s going to take cross sector partnership to address these challenges. There are smart folks tackling issues, so keep the hope. OHEC’s #UpstreamInitiative is designed to create solutions that live in the community, in a cross-sector manner, to get ahead of the trauma and adverse experiences that lead to these downstream issues.
