How do these two CEOs implement a 4 Day Week in their organizations? They share their insights at the WSJ CEO Council: Tom Moore, CEO of financial advisory firm says that: - "What we’re saying to all our staff is, if you can find a way to do your job in four days a week instead of five days a week, you get a gift day, as we term it. You get a day off a week." - Leaders of the individual small teams that make up the firm decide how the 4 day week is run. - They never told their clients outright, but they have found out by osmosis. - Delivery output hasn't been affected, hence there was no need to tell clients. - They encourage their teams to share how they spent their gift days to discourage people working on their days off. Ed Siegel of Charity Bank shares his insights: - "In our organization, most people are off either on Monday or Friday. The teams are left to decide what that arrangement will be and that there is sufficient coverage in place so that a certain service of the bank doesn’t completely shut down on a day a week." - They've set up a productivity taskforce which shares ideas and implements them to increase company productivity. - Everyone's contract has been changed to a 4 day work week. - "They value that three-day weekend means when they come in on Monday, or Tuesday if that’s the case, they put their heads down and they get it done." Dr. Dale Whelehan sums it up: "The four-day week is already here—people are only working the equivalent of productivity of around four days." "But there’s a huge amount of unproductive time in the workweek due to long meetings, inefficient technology, poor communication, poor process." The first company I worked for celebrated Profit-Sharing Day every year on the last Friday in March. There were decorations, contests, raffles, videos, fundraisers, and of course lots of good food. I enjoyed this tradition for about 10 years until the compensation program changed and the profit-sharing celebrations were phased out. I worked there for 13 more years and, in hindsight, it’s interesting to reflect on how the culture of the organization was impacted by the loss of this tradition. Certainly, the employees looked forward to the associated bonuses, but it was much more than that. On a Facebook alumni page for current and former employees of this company, many of the memories and photos revolve around those profit-sharing gatherings. After they ended, there were other employee festivities, but there wasn’t anything that connected the whole company the way Profit-Sharing Day did. I was reminded of this recently at the Annual department Retreat where I work now. This is a custom I’d not seen before. Each year every department is strongly encouraged to hold a “retreat” where the employees gather outside of work. We went up to a lodge in the mountains and had a great time together, playing games, exploring nature, and just enjoying each other’s company. It was a great day. In their book “The Power of Moments,” Chip and Dan Heath emphasize the importance of creating rituals to foster connection. I’ve found this to be true not only with business organizations, but also with families or friend groups (i.e., reunions, monthly dinners, weekly movie nights, standing lunch appointments, annual trips, etc.). Take a minute today to reflect on groups you belong to that are important to you. How to Boost Post-Pandemic Employee Giving & Volunteering, shed light on key issues in employee engagement, giving, and volunteer participation. Moderator Michael Tipton, President, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation, kicked off the session by reminding attendees of the many benefits research has shown employee volunteerism can produce—improved business reputation, increased employee satisfaction, reduced turnover, and even boosts in health and well-bring. “If you do this work well, it can be mutually reinforcing… [It] can lead to really positive outcomes for us as businesses, for employees, and also for community partners,” Tipton emphasized. Addressing where companies find themselves now, Brianna R. Alexander, MPA, Manager, Corporate Citizenship – Employee Giving & Engagement at Ally Financial talked about the importance of a program reset—not unlike rebooting one’s computer—in the wake of the pandemic. “The approach we took was reigniting the plan. Let’s reintroduce giving back to our employees. We framed it as ‘re-imagine giving.’” Alexander, along with Windy Pham, Social Impact Manager at Macy's, Inc. and Audrianne C.
