Yesterday, I had the pleasure again of judging the final round Effie UK. The great thing about judging the final round is that you are only reading the fab entries that got shortlisted. The bad thing is that you need to be able to grade them from good to great. There were a few things that made the really great entries stand out to me: 1. They make the category challenge really clear and interesting from the start. They enlighten you enough about the category so you feel you know it, even if you don't. They are also clear on the brand size and how this impacts its challenge. Big brands, small brands or somewhere in between, all these have different and very interesting challenges to read about. 2. They go beyond a strong paid story to having a strong story also in earned and owned. Even better if they can extend the story to internal engagement and product development and show that this wasn't just a killer comms strategy, it was truly a marketing strategy 3. They don't try to fudge or ignore discounting other factors that might have influenced their results. They were honest, transparent and rigorous - even if there is a hole in the data. 4. Their entry is clearly written for the awards category, not cut and paste from another awards category. Obvious, but not always done. 5. The strategic or creative shift is so counterintuitive yet so simple and smart, you just fall in love with it I can't wait to see which of the amazing entries I read yesterday are awarded. #effectiveness #creativity #effies

Rumours of my lack of bicep strength are entirely accurate.
Fight or Flight won two prestigious The Marketing Society Awards earlier this month for our work with Roland DG EMEA. As well as best B2B campaign, we walked away with one of the 'Big Three' Judges' Choice awards for the Most Inspirational Story beating out competition from mega brands Cadbury, Guinness, ITV and Mayor of London. The trophies were so heavy Charlie couldn't even do his customary bicep curl celebration, so this photo of three very excited founders will have to do! Kudos to Stephen Davis, Lauren Swinnerton and Kirstie Price for more deserved recognition for your creative bravery and innovation!

This little chart caught my eye – showing (based on econometric modelling) that for every £1 spent on #advertising, HEINEKEN Beverages' Foster's brand generated £32 in sales revenue. It's an amazing result. But what's also intriguing are the differences you'll find in revenue-generated-per-pound even among IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) award winners. Here’s a question. If something is the right thing to do, how patient should you be? Our first exchange with the Effie board was on February 25th, 2011. Since then, we have talked about this alliance with various leaders of the brand across the years, but it takes some true vision (I mean you Jae Goodman and you Traci Alford) to get over the numerous hurdles to make this a reality. Marketers, brands, agencies — everyone in our business — need creativity and effectiveness to align and this will help that happen more than ever. Lesson of the day: good things come to those who wait. A million “Thank yous” to the amazing Ascential and Effie teams who worked tirelessly to unite our brands.
