But time will run out.   Community colleges remain the only public higher education institutions in Pennsylvania still awaiting funds authorized in the state's 2023-24 budget.-- funds that over 245,000 students are counting on for their education. In our latest episode of Future U, we had an insightful discussion on the role and future of legacy admissions in higher education. Legacy admissions has come under scrutiny recently due in part to the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action. But there are reasons universities like legacy admissions. One of the arguments supporting legacy admissions is that the practice could theoretically support low-income students by fostering loyalty and boosting fundraising, thus potentially contributing more financial aid for those in need. Proponents further claim that the presence of legacy students could bring certain advantages to an institution in that it fosters a uniform culture and connects students across generations. But there are new studies like the one from Raj Chetty that claim legacy admissions overly helps wealthy, White applicants. And, there are examples like Johns Hopkins, which ceased legacy admissions without seeing a drop in donations. This is a complex issue with no easy answers. But, as Jeff Selingo points out in the episode, schools are most likely not going to get rid of it without intervention from state or federal government. This is a conversation worth having as we strive for greater equity in education. We wrapped up our first Back to School Conference of our new five year funding cycle yesterday afternoon, and it has left us feeling more excited than ever about what the future has in store! The theme of the Back to School Conference was “We Endure, We Adapt, We Lead,” and Sherrice Dorsey-Smith, DCYF's Director of Programs, Planning and Grants, shared this in her opening remarks: “We Endure, We Adapt, We Lead is essentially DCYF’s call to action. When we are asked, “how are we going to move the needle on these concerns?” we can confidently state that through the Children & Youth Fund, (1) this is what we did, (2) this is how much effort we put into what we did, and (3) here are the results and outcomes of our collective efforts. By the end of the five-year funding cycle, we hope that the data points you see today will be different. We hope that we will move the needle - our children, youth, transitional age young adults, and families demand this of us. The bridge between hope and results is a plan and action. DCYF is ready to partner with you as we look ahead."
