I want to share with you snips of the results of the graduationproject of Raghad Sakef at the #aviationdepartment of the #universityofamsterdam She conducted a survey among 50 pilots and aviation professionals. - 76% rated mental health as extremely important for safe cockpit operations - 54% believe that the pilot support program is effective in mitigating pilots mental health - 68% think the pilot support program is reactive. - 60 % think that mental health assesment should be combination of pilot selfassesment, assesment by colleages and assesment by trained professionals. - 50 % think that the SenSe method of peer and self evaluation could be complementary to the pilot support program - 85% of the sample expressed confidence in the SenSe method as a valuable tool for identifying mental health issues in their early stages. #safethedate 16 may Pilots Mental Health seminar at the #universityamsterdam with the greates speakers in the industry. Discover how Heart Rate Variability (HRV) training with HeartMathUK+IRL can boost your resilience, improve your focus, and enhance your performance. This recent research study with one of the world’s leading airlines uses the HeartMath Quick Coherence Technique (QCT), improving pilots' stress, resilience and psychophysiological balance. Learn more about our HeartMath® Resilience Training and Coaching in Organisations... https://lnkd.in/eE_z5uMJ ABSTRACT Commercial pilots endure multiple stressors in their daily and occupational lives which are detrimental to psychological well-being and cognitive functioning. The Quick coherence technique (Qct) is an effective intervention tool to improve stress resilience and psychophysiological balance based on a five-minute paced breathing exercise with heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback. The current research reports on the application of Qct training within an international airline to improve commercial pilots’ psychological health and support cognitive functions. Forty-four commercial pilots volunteered in a one-month training programme to practise self-regulated Qct in day-to-day life and flight operations. #HeartMathUKIRL #HRV #PilotWellness #AviationSafety #teamcoherence

Today marks both the end of World Mental Health Month and also International Cabin Crew Day. Throughout May, #EASA has teamed up with Aviation Action to Run the Runways of Europe to promote awareness of mental health in aviation. Huge thanks to all the organisations that have supported this effort. On International Cabin Crew Day, it is important to recognise the role that all cabin crew play in our industry. They are the face of aviation to our customers. This means that they are often called upon to deal with difficult and unruly passengers. The impact of this on the mental health of cabin crew should never be underestimated. For all staff, a purely compliance-based approach to managing both mental and physical health is not enough. Safety relies on our staff being operationally ready and fit for duty so they can perform to the best of their ability. We have created a new article on the EASA Air Ops Community Site to help you understand how to take a more risk-based approach to the human element of safety. https://lnkd.in/eUrvDbuz #WeAreAviation

Celebrity Psychologist, International Speaker. Integrity Specialist. Mental Health practitioner. Bookings on platforms below.
On World Mental Health Day I want to highlight our extraordinary pilots and aviation crew. 👏 I applaud them as they have one of the most stressful jobs in the world! As we move into the busy holiday season, I offer my services in terms of confidential mentoring, coaching sessions, keynote talks and training on burn out, stress, mental resilience and all aspects of mental health. It great to see the crew bring laughter into the cabin. At least that way more people will watch the safety demonstration! 😊 #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthday #PilotLife #pilot #aviation #aviationlovers #aviationdaily #celebritypsychologist #keynotespeaker #internationalspeaker

Aviation industry and a step further in mental health. The FAA's latest regulations show the necessary steps to enhance mental health support within the aviation industry. One of the suggestion of the regulation is: mental health training. Knowing the industry from the inside, I can see how little awareness is around internal and external stressors and regulation limitation that may be a challenge for a mental health training. This FAA suggestion has some setbacks from my perspective. 1. There are insufficient studies conducted on pilots and crew’s cohort. Training materials are expected to be data-driven. 2. The studies are not just insufficient but culturally and gender biased. The industry has already a huge gap in gender representation and it is way behind regarding inclusion and diversity. Let’s just remember that approximate percentage of the world's airline pilots who are female vary in the range of 4% to 6%!!!! 3. There are insufficient mental health workers/therapists/experts in aviation field. Training in mental health is expensive to start in, and the industry is a niche. Aviation comes with its own characteristics. Same as culture, the industry internal and external stressors along with national and International regulation need to be known by the mental health professional. Addressing these challenges is important for ensuring flight safety and supporting pilots' and cabin crew’s mental health. #aviation #mentalhealth #mentalhealthtraining

SIMILARITY BETWEEN HEIGHT CHAMBER AND STARTLE AND SURPRISE!! Those of us who have had the opportunity to carry out training in an altitude chamber know that there are two main objectives, which are the recognition of both the signs and symptoms of hypoxia in a flight crew. The signs are those physical evidences detectable by us in another member of the crew, such as cyanosis, euphoria, exaltation, etc. and on the other hand, there are the symptoms that are imperceptible to others but that allow me to self-recognize the individual degradations. Today, when we delve into training models based on competencies and refer to the management of what we call “startle and surprise”, it is necessary to understand that the important thing about exposure to the training event is the internalization of the response it has in me as an individual, to be able to understand the effects to which I could be exposed in a real event. All individuals respond physically and mentally in different ways, while in some organisms the manifestation is of blockage, in others, on the contrary, it is of total exaltation and excessive “need to execute actions with immediacy”, and that is where we understand that Although there are some reactions that improve response capabilities unlike others, losing control over them can also be risky based on the final result. I would then dare to assure that “startle and surprise” training must be as similar as hypoxia training, that both must allow me to internalize my individual conditions, as well as the early recognition of the possible conditions of the other members of the crew. , and it is there where the functions of mutual support, mutual monitoring and intervention, proposed by the multi crew Cooperation (MCC), take on greater relevance and are geared to the final result of the training. Author of "Let's talk about mental health and safety" and "HAZOP Questions". HAZOP, LOPA and SIL trainer.
LEST WE FORGET I am (so far as other constraints permit) making a daily post of process and other safety events which have happened on that day in previous years. I will intersperse these with mental health and safety incidents, since my twin passions are process safety and mental health and safety. This is to promote thinking and is based on the theory that, by and large, we don't invent new ways of killing people: we fail to adequately learn from the mistakes of the past. On this day (26th January) in 1974, Turkish Airlines Flight 301 crashed. https://lnkd.in/ecsVF3cS What can your organisation learn from this? Have you read my books “HAZOP Questions”, “HAZID Questions” and “Let’s talk about mental health and safety?”
