Solar Power in 1884. Charles Fritts installed the first solar panels on New York City rooftop in 1884 Step back to 1883, when the inventive spirit of Charles Fritts in New York led to a groundbreaking creation: the first solar cell. Fritts ingeniously coated selenium with a delicate layer of gold, and the result was remarkable. The selenium module produced a continuous, constant current of considerable force. However, this early solar cell achieved an energy conversion rate of only 1 to 2 percent—a modest impact by today’s standards. Fast forward to the present, where modern solar cells operate at a much higher efficiency, typically ranging from 15 to 20 percent. These advanced cells harness sunlight to generate electricity, powering homes, businesses, and even entire communities. But let’s not forget that Fritts’s pioneering work laid the foundation for this progress. The term “photovoltaic”—named after the renowned Italian physicist and chemist Alessandro Volta—captures the essence of this technology. It refers to the process of converting light energy into electricity. You’ll often hear it used interchangeably with the term “photoelectric”. So, whether we call it photovoltaic or photoelectric, it all traces back to Charles Fritts’s early vision—a spark that ignited a solar revolution. 🌞🔌 #solar #solarpower #solarinstallation #photovoltaic #solarpv #solarenergy #renewables
