This means that past work experience may not serve us as well as #curiosity, #newideas, #askingwhy, #fresheyes. As an example, recently I hired someone with zero work experience - straight out of Uni. Exactly that, that they had no work experience allowed me to realise their potential without judgement of previous work experience. The first half of my professional life was a career of convenience. I was fortunate that family and friends introduced me to jobs, and vouched for me. It was primarily THEIR connections that opened the door. I applied to lots of jobs and heard back from few. I often only got 1 job offer and took it. And I have no regrets. I had 3 careers until I landed in Solutions Consulting. - Sales - Marketing - Revenue Operations (marketing and system ops back then) I learned powerful skills from each that make me a strong SC. - Sales = WIFM, NEEGU, ask for it, solve their problem - Marketing = Be succinct, recycle content, measure everything, have fun, stand out - Ops = Demonstrate, discovery, solutioning, implementation, what matters to each department, document everything, put the user first Ultimately, I decided to chase my joy. I relied on my adjacent and transferable skills to make the jumps. - Sales = I didn’t like the stress, - Marketing = Work & MBA wasn’t for me + realized I made more $ as an SC than I would as a marketing manager with an MBA - Ops = My earning potential was limited, and I didn’t like the maintenance work All my SC jobs were from my OWN network. It was partly because I built connections over time. And partly because I chase my joy. You might not be in your dream job today. But you are collecting the skills and contacts needed for that job later. Enjoy the ride, make connections, hone your skills, build your brand, and be open.
