#OnThisDay in history, the US Navy allowed Black women to join Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service, or WAVES, to support World War II efforts. At that time, Congress and U.S. Navy leaders disagreed on whether women should be in the Naval Reserve or part of an auxiliary. President Roosevelt signed Public Law 689 establishing the Women’s Reserve as a branch of the Naval Reserve on July 30, 1942. Frances Wills and Harriet Ida Pickens were the Navy's first Black WAVES officers. They were sworn in by Lieutenant Rosamond D. Selle, USNR, in New York City. #Navy #WAVES #WWII #TBT
