Another year, and another #Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix is upon us. We all know what we'll get, a procession of cars, with limited overtaking and racing excitement around the #Pricipality's narrow street circuit. Playing devil's advocate, isn't it about time this outdated race was dumped from the #F1 season? Here are a few reasons to consider why: 1. Track Layout and Racing Quality: * Limited Overtaking: The narrow and twisty layout of the Monaco circuit makes overtaking extremely difficult, often resulting in processional races where qualifying positions largely determine the race outcome. * Safety Concerns: The tight confines and lack of run-off areas can make crashes more severe and hazardous for drivers. 2. #Technological Mismatch: * Modern F1 Cars: The current generation of F1 cars, with their larger size and increased downforce, are not well-suited to the narrow streets of Monaco. This can exacerbate the overtaking difficulties and lead to less exciting races. 3. #Commercial Viability: * Event Fee, Sponsorship and Exposure: While Monaco has prestige, it does not offer the same commercial benefits as other races. It pays the lowest event hosting fee of all races and the limited track space also means fewer advertising opportunities and fewer grandstand seats for spectators. 4. Alternative Locations: * More Dynamic Tracks: Many circuits provide more dynamic and exciting racing, with better facilities and infrastructure to handle modern F1 needs. Bigger commercial markets: Countries such as #India and #Indonesia with huge growing consumer markets and younger demographics are not currently being served. 5. #Diversity & #Inclusion: * Given its predominately elite, wealthy and white live audience, the exclusive nature of the race is not fit for purpose from a progressive sports rightsholder D&I perspective, where #F1 itself states, "Our mission is to unleash the full power of diversity wherever we go - removing barriers, nurturing talent, and inspiring change". I have wanted to do the Mille Miglia Road Race in Italy for a number of years now. As I approach the age where I may just have enough free time to prepare a car, I decided somewhat optimistically to investigate the entry criteria. First off, you need an eligible car. A model that participated in the race between 1927-1957. This usually means a £50k+ car. To be considered for entry, the rarer the better makes it much easier. Basic entry fee amounts to Euro 12,500 plus 22% VAT (total Euro 15,250.00). But before that, you need: vehicle registration 900.00 Euro + VAT for the Participant category and 500.00 Euro + VAT for the Eligible category. Then : owners will pay a yearly membership fee for each car of 200.00 Euro + VAT for the first car owned, 50.00 Euro + VAT for the following, which will allow them to be part of the exclusive Registro 1000 Miglia Community. So add in getting the car there, hotels, food and the inevitable look around Venice as a side trip, you are looking at £20k to join in. Then its by invite only. The organisers will hymn and haw over whether they actually need to allow another Lancia Aurelia B20 to start or should they make room for a rarer Siata 208 CS. You could wait years. I could register and apply now, but be dead by the time I’m accepted. Unless your car is super special, then you are straight in……prestige and kudos for the organisers you see? Christ!….. makes you want to give up before you start ! In this world where want and need are so prevalent, is there a place for such elitism? Morally better ways to spend £20k of course. The first European motoring competition took place in 1887, organized by the newspaper “Le Vélocipède Illustré” and the petrol merchant Emile Levassor. The event was a reliability trial, running from Paris to Rouen, and was open to “horseless carriages” (early automobiles) powered by steam, electricity, or internal combustion engines. Over 100 participants entered the competition, but only 25 vehicles were deemed eligible to start the race. The winner was the Count de Dion in his steam-powered vehicle. This event is considered a landmark in the history of automotive racing. Rallying as a motorsport takes place on public or private roads with modified production or specially built road-legal cars. A few examples: 24 hours of Le Mans in France, world rally championships held in several countries, or the Dakar Rally. . The mark of a great racer is consistency. McLaren announced on Tuesday that Alpinestars is the new technical clothing partner in Formula 1, IndyCar, Formula E, Extreme E and F1 Academy. This is the reason why Sparco has not been on the McLaren partnership list 2024. When we look at the Aston Martin list Alpinestars is missing, so perhaps McLaren and Aston Martin switch the partnerships, Alpinestars moving to McLaren and Sparco goes to Aston Martin. Sparco announced a partnership with RedBull in October 2023, so Sparco is making some changes. That leaves Haas and McLaren with Alpinestars. Aston Martin is loosing Peroni to Ferrari, as Asahi Group has signed with Ferrari. That could bring Spanish Hijos de Rivera and Estrella Galicia to Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso. Taking into consideration McLaren has the largest partnership network the changes are minor.
