Racing Icon - the Mazda 787B! A Group C race car built to compete in the World Sportscar Championship, the All Japan Sports Prototype Championship and at Le Mans. It took the win at Le Mans in 1991 behind the driving of Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler and Bertrand Gachot. Making it the first Japanese built car to win Le Mans, a feat that took another 27 years to accomplish again when Toyota won Le Mans with the TS050 Hybrid LMP1 car in 2018. It is powered by a R26B, a 4-Rotor NA 2.6L making 700hp and 448lb-ft of torque (though it was capable of 900hp). That power was driven to the rear wheels via a 5-Speed Manual gearbox developed by Porsche. All this in a package weighing 1830lbs (830kgs). However, the 787B's real secret weapon was its reliability. Since it wasn't the fastest on the grid, Mazda relied on the fact it lasted. Especially in endurance races. They leaned into faster cornering, rather than sustained top speed that wears down cars. Which led them to their victory in '91. After the Le Mans winning season, this winning chassis (787B-002) was retired from service. It sat on display at the Otaru City Museum for much of its life, then it was sent to back to Mazda Headquarters. Now it makes its rounds at events/displays around the world, including Fuji Speedway where this photo was taken. 🚩 Monster by Name In May 2015, at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este near Lake Como, the Mostro powered by Maserati was debuted. The Mostro was designed and built by the famous coachbuilder Zagato. This wonderful creation celebrated two momentous occasions. The first was the 100th anniversary of Maserati. The second commemorates the famous racing car, the Maserati 450 S Coupé Zagato Monster. The Maserati 450S was a classic sports and racing car driven by some greats, including Juan Miguel Fangio, Stirling Moss and Carroll Shelby. Zagato has a history with Maserati; it built the legendary 1957 Maserati 450S Coupé, which Stirling Moss commissioned and raced. The 450S was known as 'il Mostro' (the Monster) and thought to be the most powerful front-engined racing car in the world into the 1990s. Zagato only created nine; of these, only the Costin Zagato was turned into a road-going GT car. Regarding the 'new' Mostro, only five were built and fitted with a naturally aspirated Maserati 4.2 litre V8 engine producing an estimated 460bhp. The Mostro'sdoors opened upwards, unlike any other Maserati. The five Zagato-created Mostros were all offered to existing Zagato clients. Pricing has never been disclosed!

NEW BOOK - FORMULA 1 CAR BY CAR 2000–09 by Peter Higham hits the Evro Publishing warehouse next week! Evro’s decade-by-decade series covering all Formula 1 cars and teams moves into the new millennium. The first half of the decade brought the strongest domination in F1’s history from Michael Schumacher and Ferrari, with five consecutive drivers’ and constructors’ titles. Then came a changing of the guard when young new stars — Fernando Alonso, Kimi Räikkönen, Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button — claimed championships. Teams also reshuffled in the decade’s second half, as Renault and McLaren prospered again, and newcomers like Brawn and Red Bull came through, although major manufacturers such as Toyota and Jaguar always struggled. As ever, the cars became faster and technology moved on apace, such that regulations had to be tightened to rein them in, bringing smaller engines in 2006 and considerable aerodynamic constraint in 2009.
