INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION 2025 📚 Theme: AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation EDUCATION IS A HUMAN RIGHT. Since 2021, the number of out-of-school children has risen globally from 6 million to 250 million—a staggering increase in just three years. In Sub-Saharan Africa alone, 1 in 5 children are not attending school. This growing gap in education demands urgent and collective action. At Custodians of African Literature (COAL), we are committed to transforming education by partnering with grassroots organizations to deliver quality accelerated learning for early childhood development. But we can't do it alone. This year’s theme, "AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation," challenges us to reflect on how artificial intelligence is reshaping education. While AI offers powerful tools to enhance learning, it also raises critical questions: How do we ensure education remains human-centered? How can AI be harnessed to close the educational gap rather than widen it? How do we achieve the Education Agenda by 2030 and stay on track? 📘 Injini Think Tank recommendations: White Paper on e-Education (2004) The Injini Think Tank has issued critical recommendations for improving e-education in South Africa based on the 2004 White Paper. Here’s what they propose: 🔑 Redefine e-education: It’s time to move beyond basic ICT skills. We must integrate EdTech, AI, coding, and robotics to equip learners for the future of work. 🔑 Address local challenges: Solutions must tackle South Africa's unique issues, such as language barriers and socio-economic inequalities, ensuring digital inclusion and access to education for all. 🔑 Prioritise schools & educators: Let schools and teachers lead the charge, free from external political influences. The Digital4All Project team in Finland conducted a study on digital inclusion in Finland's higher education institutions (HEI). 🏫 The study consisted of a literature review as well as field research. Here is what the team found out:   👉 While people in Finland are accustomed to navigating digital spaces, approximately 1 million people struggle with using different digital platforms.   👉 In higher education institutions, students with learning, reading, and concentration difficulties require more support in online learning.   👉 Also, students with mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, report more difficulties in studying online.   👉 Teaching personnel and other stakeholders in HEI are comfortable using and trying different digital tools that support the inclusion of all learners.   👉 They also view the use of AI favourably but highlight the significance of ethical discussion surrounding it.   💡 Find more about the study here: https://lnkd.in/dM9WHmkx   #Digital4All #digitaleducation #inclusivelearning

The theme for 2025: UNESCO has dedicated the 2025 observance to "Artificial Intelligence and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation." Planned Activities: Global Discussions: UNESCO will host conferences in Paris and New York, along with webinars, to facilitate a worldwide conversation on the role of AI in education. Learning Sessions: The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) is organizing an online learning program focusing on educational technology, including an EdTech 101 session. This event aims to reflect on national education coalitions' perspectives on the #TechOnOurTerms campaign. Webinar: UNESCO will conduct a webinar titled "Lifelong Learning in the Age of AI," exploring how artificial intelligence can support continuous education throughout an individual's life. These activities aim to promote a comprehensive understanding of AI's potential and challenges in the educational sector, fostering discussions on ethical considerations and best practices for integrating technology into learning environments. Here are some key facts about the International Day of Education: ✍️Date: It is celebrated annually on January 24. ✍️Established by the United Nations: The UN General Assembly proclaimed it in December 2018 to recognize the importance of education for global peace and sustainable development. Purpose: To raise awareness of the role education plays in achieving peace and development. To highlight education as a human right and a key driver for breaking cycles of poverty. ✍️Global Significance: Over 258 million children and youth are out of school globally. About 617 million children and adolescents cannot read or do basic math. Many countries still face challenges in providing inclusive, equitable, and quality education. ✍️Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Education is linked to SDG 4, which aims to "ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all." ✍️Challenges Highlighted: It addresses issues like unequal access, lack of funding, the gender gap in education, and the impact of crises (e.g., pandemics or conflicts) on learning.

A part of UN 2.0 | United Nations week, a series of groundbreaking dialogues aimed at rethinking, refocusing and recharging SDG advancement, the “Reimagining Education” session deep dived into how connectivity, digital and foresight can transform education. Giga co-lead Alex Wong took part in the event, which featured these key takeaways: 1️⃣ Connectivity is the keystone to narrowing the digital divide in education. Giga is laser-focused on bringing the internet to every school in the world by 2030, which can only be achieved through innovative technological solutions and creative public-private partnerships.  2️⃣ Using data not only to get a snapshot of the present but to meet the needs of the future. UNESCO’s Futures Literacy Programme is doing just that to establish anticipatory policy making ideas and explore the spectrum of learning possibilities to help students meet future challenges.  3️⃣ Digital learning tools can turbocharge education. UNICEF is testing a gamified math learning platform in three countries that is showing great promise. In Bhutan, for example, 40% in a class of fifth grade students increased their math skills during a 12-week pilot.  4️⃣ Future challenges in education revolve around five main issues, identified by the panelists as decentralized learning, personalized curricula, equitable access to technology, improved student mental health and the bridging of artificial and human intelligence. #ReimaginingEducation #Connectivity #TechForGood

I had the privilege of observing a heartwarming exchange between a fourth-grade student and their teacher. As they chatted about how phones have changed, the student's innocent observation caught my attention: "With the old ones, you couldn’t watch YouTube!" This simple remark got me thinking, particularly about the digital inequalities faced by many children in Bosnia and Herzegovina and worldwide. It reminded me of the challenges they encounter in accessing the internet, ICT devices, and necessary guidance for beneficial online content, vital for their education and development. --- As someone deeply immersed in propelling digital transformation for education, I frequently encounter the challenge of finding moments for reflection amidst the whirlwind of ongoing initiatives and technological advancements. This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming our dear colleague Auken Tungatarova from UNICEF ECARO. Together, we embarked on a journey across the country, engaging with stakeholders at various levels. During these enriching discussions, I posed one question to all participants: In the hypothetical scenario of a crisis akin to the magnitude of the COVID-19 pandemic, would we feel prepared to ensure uninterrupted and quality learning process? Their responses not only echoed a collective commitment to strategically shaping and advancing the digital learning agenda beyond crisis management, but also helped us identify some of the remaining gaps and challenges. There was unanimous recognition of the pivotal role of #teachers in driving digital transformation. Without robust support and adequate training for teachers, our ability to harness technology to address the learning crisis and prepare students for the demands of the 21st century remains limited. With big thanks to Auken for her insightful comments, questions and suggestions, I eagerly anticipate the progression of our interventions and their greater impact on the quality of learning for all children in BIH. #digitallearning #edtech #bih
