Great tips here on managing Allergy-Induced Asthma. #asthmaawareness #allergies #aaf Asthma and Allergy Foundation
Understanding Allergy-Induced Asthma! Allergy-induced asthma, often known as allergic asthma, is a condition where asthma symptoms are triggered by exposure to allergens. Let’s explore what it is and how you can manage it for better respiratory health. What is Allergy-Induced Asthma? In allergic asthma, the airways become sensitive to certain allergens, such as pollen, pet dander, mould, or dust mites. When exposed to these triggers, it can lead to asthma symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing. Managing Allergy-Induced Asthma: 1. Identify Triggers: Work with your healthcare provider to identify specific allergens triggering your asthma. 2. Create an Allergen-Free Zone: Minimise exposure to allergens at home by keeping living spaces clean and well-ventilated. 3. Consult Your Asthma Nurse or GP: If you suspect allergy-induced asthma, seek guidance from your asthma nurse or GP for proper diagnosis and management. Support Our Mission at Asthma and Allergy Foundation: Your support helps us raise awareness and provide resources for those managing allergy-induced asthma. Contribute to initiatives promoting asthma and allergy awareness at https://lnkd.in/gnvg4Mx. Every donation makes a difference! When considering indoor air quality and purification units, there are several key concerns to address: 1. Effectiveness: Standard air purifiers and filtration units may not be as effective at capturing allergens and pollutants compared to certified asthma and allergy filtration units. These specialized units are designed with advanced filtration technology specifically to target and remove allergens, such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores, which can trigger respiratory issues. 2. Certification: Asthma and allergy-certified filtration units undergo rigorous testing and meet strict standards set by reputable organizations, such as the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) or the Asthma Society of Canada. This certification ensures that the unit has been proven effective at reducing allergens and providing cleaner air for individuals with respiratory conditions. 3. Health Impact: For individuals with asthma, allergies, or other respiratory sensitivities, investing in certified filtration units can have a significant impact on their health and well-being. These units help to minimize exposure to airborne triggers, reduce symptoms, and improve overall respiratory function, leading to better quality of life. By addressing these concerns and choosing certified asthma and allergy filtration units, individuals can make informed decisions to effectively improve indoor air quality and better manage respiratory conditions.

I have been on all sides of a clinical trial. Clinical trials must be a health care option. 1. When I was young - My mom consented for me to be in a clinical trial from age 4 to 17. 2. I wrote a protocol as a new Clinical Researcher. I tried to consent my 1st patient & the patient informed me the protocol was not patient friendly. I learned the importance of Patient Co-Creation of a Clinical Trial Protocol. 3. I have consented as an adult to be a part of a clinical trial. 4. Even though today is Clinical Trials Awareness Day, there are many ways People can engage in research. a. Provide patient and caregiver insights about living with a condition. b. Provide insights about a study protocol and patient participation c. Participate in an disease or condition specific education study. d. Provide insights about new medication options e. Provide expertise to studies f. Help write and review clinical trial summaries for patients. There are many more places patient ans caregiver partners can participate. If you have questions about participating, give me a shout!
Today is Clinical Trial Awareness Day! Clinical trials help improve the lives of people living with different health conditions and are important in advancing treatment and management for many chronic diseases. Anyone can get involved as a patient partner in a clinical trial! "My patient has an allergy to levofloxacin, can I use ciprofloxacin?" We recently had a provider inquire about a patient, who presented with a chronic wound infection. PCR was performed on the wound specimen and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was detected. The patient had a documented allergy to levofloxacin with a listed reaction of severe rash. Ciprofloxacin was recommended for treatment, but the provider was hesitant, assuming the patient would be allergic to ciprofloxacin as well. Since this was an outpatient setting, an IV medication was not feasible to be utilized for treatment. Therefore, a fluoroquinolone remained the only oral option available for this patient. Shah et al evaluated rates of fluoroquinolone cross-reactivity in 230 patients across 19 hospitals. Of the 161 patients who received a different fluoroquinolone after a documented allergy, only 6% (all female) experienced a hypersensitivity reaction. Rates of cross-reactivity differed per agent; highest risk with moxifloxacin (9%), followed by ciprofloxacin (6%), and levofloxacin (2%). This data was relayed to the provider and she felt comfortable prescribing a course of ciprofloxacin to this patient. Diphenhydramine and famotidine PRN was recommended in the case of the patient developing a rash. https://lnkd.in/eag_KMB2

As we turn the corner out of allergy season, adequate asthma control is next on the agenda as the weather cools. Not only is asthma an independent risk factor for anaphylaxis, it also presents a point of challenge to balance the risk vs benefit of oral steroids in the wake of inadequately controlled asthma as outlined in the brilliant landmark paper by Dr David Price et al in 2018. Price DB, Trudo F, Voorham J, Xu X, Kerkhof M, Ling Zhi Jie J, Tran TN. Adverse outcomes from initiation of systemic corticosteroids for asthma: long-term observational study. J Asthma Allergy. 2018 Aug 29;11:193-204. doi: 10.2147/JAA.S176026. PMID: 30214247; PMCID: PMC6121746.
