Condition of the Day: Endophthalmitis 👁️ What it is: Endophthalmitis is a rare but severe eye infection that leads to inflammation within the eye’s interior structures. Often caused by bacteria or fungi, this condition can occur following eye surgery, injury, or even through bloodstream infections. The bacteria release toxins that damage the eye’s tissues, creating a significant risk of vision loss if untreated. Symptoms: Key signs include severe eye pain, redness, swelling, blurred vision, light sensitivity, and occasionally, discharge from the eye. These symptoms can develop rapidly, making prompt medical intervention crucial. Treatment & Prevention: Treatment typically involves direct antibiotic or antifungal injections into the eye to halt the infection, often supplemented by surgery to remove infected tissue if needed. While endophthalmitis can be difficult to prevent completely, maintaining sterile conditions during eye procedures is essential. Early recognition and treatment are critical to preserving sight. Why Awareness Matters: Conditions like endophthalmitis highlight the importance of eye health and infection control. Spreading awareness about the symptoms and risk factors can help others seek care immediately, protecting their vision and overall quality of life. #ConditionOfTheDay #Endophthalmitis #EyeHealth #InfectionAwareness #HealthcareEducation

morbidly obese patient approx 2 weeks out from Outpatient opioid free knee replacement with a high risk infection mitigation protocol. in higher risk patients can we deploy solutions to reduce infection risk (and other complications), preserve the ability to say yes for surgery, while properly managing resources? This patient is able to rise and sit from a chair (good strength/pain control) and ambulate without much discomfort. the patient only needed Tylenol and anti inflammatory meds after surgery (no narcotics). By using an ecosystem of solutions + teamwork we can achieve enhanced results to allow patients a better recovery. There’s nothing magical about the surgical technique. All the tools are currently available for any surgeon/hospital. However, this isn’t that common. Why is this not more common? We need incentives for hospitals and physicians to change. Currently, employers, government, and others don’t really differentiate between someone who gets 100 opioids or 1. They don’t differentiate between someone who returns to work in 2 weeks or 2 months. A whole host of other practical quality and value metrics that are not yet valued which can drive change

MASTOIDS Mastoiditis is an infection of the mastoid bone, specifically the air cells within the mastoid process located behind the ear. It often occurs as a result of an untreated or severe middle ear infection (otitis media) that spreads to the mastoid air cells. Because the middle ear and mastoid are connected, infections can easily pass between them, making mastoiditis a potential complication of ear infections. Symptoms of Mastoiditis Severe pain or tenderness behind the ear Swelling and redness behind the ear, which may cause the ear to stick out Fever and general feeling of unwellness Drainage from the ear (often foul-smelling if pus is present) Headache or hearing loss in the affected ear Diagnosis and Treatment Diagnosis: Doctors typically diagnose mastoiditis through a physical examination, often accompanied by imaging tests like CT or MRI scans to assess the extent of infection. Treatment: Treatment usually involves antibiotics, often administered intravenously in severe cases. If the infection doesn't respond to antibiotics, or if abscesses form, surgery (a mastoidectomy) may be needed to drain and clean the infected area. Complications If untreated, mastoiditis can lead to serious complications, including: Hearing loss Facial nerve damage Meningitis (infection of the brain’s protective membranes) Brain abscess Prompt treatment is crucial to avoid complications, and early management of ear infections can reduce the risk of developing mastoiditis. #ent #mbbs #mastoid #disease #head #infection #people #health #image
