Northrop Grumman has unveiled a photo of the XRQ-73 stealth drone, part of the Series Hybrid Electric Propulsion Aircraft Demonstration (SHEPARD) project for DARPA. Expected to fly by the end of the year.
The XRQ-73A is larger and more stealthy, with a wingspan over 30 ft (9 m). It weighs 1,250 lb (567 kg), can reach speeds of 250 knots (287 mph, 463 km/h), and can operate at an altitude of 18,000 ft (5,500 m) carrying a 400 lb (180 kg) payload.
The hybrid electric propulsion system features four ducted fans built into the wing/fuselage. Two electric generators, powered by diesel, gasoline, or aviation fuel, drive these fans.
There are two large air intakes at the front and outlets at the back, designed to minimize visual and radar detection. Since it's not a jet, its heat signature is also minimal.
