Our Clinical Services play a vital role in patient safety and clinical development so we were delighted that Nicole, one of our Project team, helped and co-authored a New Zealand Medical Journal study on pre-hospital, pre-antibiotic blood cultures for patients with suspected sepsis. "Sepsis is a life-threatening condition which without early diagnosis and treatment, has high mortality rates", says Nicole. "Usually, in hospital, blood cultures are collected before antibiotic administration to identify pathogens (a cause of the infection). However, Ambulance Officers can administer antibiotics for patients on the way to hospital who have severe infections (sepsis). "We wanted to support this study by educating our people and implementing a blood culture collection process, which complemented the work Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury did in its laboratories to analyse the blood cultures and report on pathogen detection and contamination. "When we were approached, we were extremely keen to support a formalised study to inform future decisions on implementation and supporting New Zealand's health system to improve patient outcomes."
