The International Astronomical Union (IAU) General Assembly 2024 is upon us -the 6 - 15 August is around the corner. We shall see many of you soon in Cape Town at the International Convention Centre. As part of this event, our outreach and education committee has organised unique opportunities for schools and science centers to engage with astronomers through virtual sessions. The purpose of these sessions is to inspire and share scientific knowledge with learners, teachers, students, and the public about the wonders of the universe, recent discoveries, and the intrigue of astronomical research. As such we are extending an invitation to you to request a virtual session/slot for your school, science centre or organisation by completing the REGISTRATION FORM (https://bit.ly/3LCWdGl). Please provide details about your preferred dates, topics of interest, target group, and the age group of your audience to help us tailor the sessions to your needs. These sessions are scheduled from 29 July – 15 August. Virtual Session Opportunities: Interactive Q&A sessions: Engage, and ask questions, and learn about their research. Educational Presentations: Attend virtual lectures on various astronomy topics tailored for different age groups and knowledge levels. Teacher training sessions on specific curriculum-aligned topics How to Request a Session: Complete the registration form with your details and preferences. Submit the form, and our team will get in touch with you to confirm the arrangements. 📌 Save the date! Crime & Society Research Group (CRiS), BIRMM, and Brussels Centre for Urban Studies are getting together to organise a workshop on the role of (public) space in migration research. Migration and mobility are pre-eminently spatial phenomena, as they consist by definition of a movement through space and the confrontation of this movement with borders and spatial demarcations. Without these spatial elements, many migration-related phenomena, concepts, classifications, and identities lose their meaning. We seek to explore the role of (public) space in migration research by bringing scholars from different disciplines for an afternoon of discussion, reflection, and action. Concerning the latter, we’ve invited the inspiring Annelys de Vet (creative designer, educator, and researcher; founder of the Subjective Atlas Series and co-founder of ‘Disarming Design from Palestine’) to hold a workshop on alternative/counter cartography 🗺 . 📅 June, 3rd, 13h- 18h, VUB Etterbeek campus ⏱ Call for papers will be launched next week! 📍 Full programme: https://lnkd.in/ejsffN7Q Mattias De Backer Lena Imeraj @Lucas Melgaço #migrationresearch #publicspace #cartography #countercartography #alternativemapping #mentalmapping #spatialturn #socialscience

University of Limoges is inviting you to an online seminar "Bunker legacies. Myths, Memories and Materialities in Danish Cold War Museums" by Rosanna Farbøl from University of Oslo. 📅 Friday April 5 at 4:30 (CET) 💻 https://lnkd.in/dYBXaT8M The Cold War shaped the Danish landscape and cityscape profoundly. Numerous bunkers remain today as legacies of a time where fear of a nuclear World War Three was imminent. This presentation delves into “the bunker” as materiality and myth, drawing inspiration from bunker studies from a broad range of fields incl. history, geography and architecture. The paper historicises the Cold War bunker from its origin as vital part of the total defence over obsolete and dormant object in the early post-Cold War period to a new afterlife as re-appropriated and cherished heritage relic. An analysis of contemporary Danish Cold War bunker museums leads to a discussion of the implications of Cold War museums being bunker museums. I argue that that (museum) function follows (bunker) form and that turning Cold War bunkers into Cold War museums that prioritise a war narrative means that memories, identities and meaning-making produced at these sites become inextricably linked to war, pushing aside equally legitimate memories of the Cold War. This calls for reflection, not least because of the controversial character of Cold War debates in Denmark and the recent mobilisation of Cold War history in making sense of the war in Ukraine.

The United Nations has proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. We are working with The Australian Institute of Physics to plan the Year in Australia. Lighting our homes, internet, fighting disease, and scanning our groceries: some of the ways that we use quantum science every day. It underpins discoveries from astronomy to photosynthesis. And Schrödinger's cat has appeared (or not) across popular culture. We want to hear your thoughts on how we might explore the impact of quantum science past, present and future in 2025. We're interested in ideas from any domain: science, culture, politics, industry, philosophy, even sport, if you can help us find the connections. To find out more about plans in Australia for the Quantum Year or to get involved, visit quantum2025.org.au. International media release at https://lnkd.in/gPbAMbkD Here are some examples from past Years we've been involved with. >> Einstein Year saw schools pair up to measure the Earth’s circumference and an art exhibition of fluid dynamics images. >> Year of Astronomy included two exhibitions at the National Gallery of Victoria and a group of artists ‘shouting at stars.’ >> International Year of Light shone on Sydney Harbour Bridge at the New Year’s fireworks. >> The Evolution Festival started with a service at St Pauls’ Cathedral in Melbourne and included a walk-through Darwin’s study at the National Museum in Canberra. #InternationalYearOfQuantumScience #QuantumScience #QuantumComputing #AustralianScience #SciComm #QuantumPhysics #QuantumTech #Quantum

HALFSPACE TEAM MEMBER WINS THE 2023 AUSTIN ROBINSON MEMORIAL PRIZE We are incredibly proud to announce that our very own Esther Chevrot-Bianco, along with her co-author Gustav Agneman, has been awarded the prestigious 2023 Austin Robinson Memorial Prize by the Royal Economic Society. This prize is given annually for the best paper published in The Economic Journal by authors within five years of receiving their PhD. Esther and Gustav were honored for their groundbreaking paper titled "Market Participation and Moral Decision-Making: Experimental Evidence from Greenland." The prize committee praised the work for making "a great leap in understanding the question of how markets and moral sentiments are intertwined." Through a brilliantly designed experiment and robust analysis, the paper provides new insights into the causal relationship between moral sentiments and market participation. By leveraging variation in occupations across Greenland's communities, Esther and Gustav surpassed all previous research on this topic. Her great work exemplifies the highest levels of economic research and analysis. Please join us in congratulating Esther on this exceptional accomplishment! You can read the paper in full here: https://lnkd.in/dP7Vk-aM #EconomicResearch #AustinRobinsonMemorialPrize #TeamHalfspace
