Women wandering freely in wild and urban landscapes, it's an outcome that benefits everyone. Many don't feel able (for alas v real reasons) to walk, (or ride, roll, skate as is our preferred and available travel) freely. The recent viral post of women walking alone and preferring to meet a lone bear vs a lone man expressed that. And as a lover of walking, I wanted to share some more reflections... As Kerri Andrews writes; 'If walking (I would add independent travel through wheelchair and other assisted walk/travel aids) is central to an individual's humanity, understanding how walking is experienced by different people will enable a better comprehension of our shared humanity' To move our bodies in fresh air is just part of our humanity. However it's much more than that, wandering is where we can do our best thinking, alone in a landscape our thoughts unfurl and creativity arrives through our freedom to wander at ease. As we move we unstick ourselves from blocks, because we physically experience ourselves moving forward, and thus our brain and hearts are also enabled to move forward and find new solutions. I was talking to my male partner about this, especially as he was inspired by another book on the joy of 'Nightwalking' in nature (yes - we really do love walking!). Initially he started his nightwalks, however he admitted stopping them because he wondered what people would think about his motivation for being out alone on an evening. Likewise, I love the idea of nightwalking and the delight of being in nature alone, however I also don't act on this desire because of fear of safety. He fears being seen as the predator and I fear being seen as the prey. This can create a divided approach to solving the problem of being at liberty to wander being open for everyone. Yet it's only together that we can solve this. So along with the practical steps of what to do as a woman, man, trans, cis or non-binary person when out wandering alone, (to counter the gendered threats and risks), we must reshape our thinking together for true liberty. #Nightwalking #SafetyForAll #WomenWanderers #GenderEquality

Venturing out on your own to explore off-the-beaten-path might seem daunting, but once you've done it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner
Many people ask me if, as a woman, it's better to travel completely alone or with a group of women who are also traveling solo. Here's my take: ✅ Traveling alone is great, but traveling with a group of like-minded individuals means you're never alone (if you don't want to be). ✅ It's cheaper. ✅ It's more fun. ✅ You start the trip with a group of strangers and end it with a group of friends from around the world. ✅ You don't have to make as many decisions, and it's simpler.
