Did Kyiv and Moscow initial a peace treaty in Istanbul in March 2022? And was it torpedoed by Boris Johnson during his no-notice visit to Kyiv on Saturday 9th April? The interview below throws some light. The head of the Ukr negotiating team in Istanbul was David Arakhamia, parliamentary party leader of “Servant of the People” party and a close political intimate of Pres. Zelensky, who was interviewed a few days ago on 1+1 TV in Ukraine, about the March peace agreement. For those who don’t want to watch it, here is a transcript. Here the agreement is given its formal title “The Agreement on the Constant Neutrality of Ukraine and the Security Guarantee”. Arakhamia: “They really, almost to the last, hoped that they would push us to sign [the agreement]….so that we would take neutrality. This was the biggest thing for them. So that (sic) they were ready to end the war. If we take, as in Finland once, neutrality, we will give the obligation that we will not join NATO” Interviewer: Only one point? Arakhamia: Well, in fact, this was the key point. Everything else is there. Cosmetic and political amendments. About denazification…Russian speaking population [the use of the Russian language in official and educational life was made a criminal offence by the Ukrainian parliament in 2019]…and bla bla bla. Interviewer: Why did Ukraine not agree to this point? Arakhamia: [long pause] Well, first of all, in order to agree to this point you need to change the constitution. Our path to NATO is written in the constitution. [note: article 11 of Minsk 2 states…Constitutional reform will be conducted in Ukraine, and a new constitution will enter into force by the end of 2015]. Secondly, there is no trust. And there was not. And there are no Russians who will do it. It could only be done if there were guarantees of security. But we could not sign something, withdraw, everyone would have exhaled there, and then they would have come more prepared. They would have come, in fact, unprepared [sic] to such an opponent. Therefore we could only work when there is 100% certainty that this will not happen again. And there is no such certainty. Moreover, when we returned from Istanbul, Boris Johnson came to Kyiv and said that we would not sign anything with them at all. And let’s just fight.” [end of recording]

Many people heard of Ukraine’s resistance because of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. However, this is not a phenomenon born in the 21st century — Ukraine has always fought for its land and people and even focused on establishing effective international relations. For example, in mid-March 1918, the Ukrainian People’s Republic began setting up its diplomatic missions abroad. During 1917-1921, Ukrainian state entities had diplomatic missions in about 30 countries, including the United States, France, Great Britain, Germany, Turkey. Our project tells how Ukrainians resisted persecution and oppression and how these processes have influenced the effective resistance of Ukrainians to Russian aggression today. We covered the issues of the struggle for independence through the artistic, religious, human rights, and partisan movements of the last 100 years. In the project, the trials meet the strength of the spirit of Ukrainians, who are an inspiration for us today and whose contribution to the struggle for freedom in the world should be more widely known. If the individuals who can find a lasting peace solution for Israel and Palestine have not been born yet, it means that the current situation and challenges persist. However, it's important to remember that political landscapes can change over time, and new leaders with fresh perspectives and innovative approaches can emerge. In the meantime, it's crucial to continue promoting dialogue, fostering understanding, and supporting initiatives aimed at creating an environment conducive to peace. International efforts, diplomatic engagement, and grassroots movements can all contribute to paving the way for future leaders to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and work towards a peaceful resolution.
