🇪🇺 The day of the European Cycling Declaration has arrived, and with it also a new era for the EU and its citizens. Important to stress enough the importance of a document that finally legitimises the bike as pivotal for the development of a modern, green, safe, healthy and mobility and life. And to highlight the importance even more, I want just to mention one or two points of the document that really have to shape the path on how bikes will be seen in the future of modern European Countries: – Cycling improves social inclusiveness, contributing to people’s physical and mental health and well-being [...]  – We aim to unleash the full potential of cycling in the EU. This Declaration recognises cycling as one of the most sustainable, accessible and inclusive, low-cost and healthy forms of transport and recreation, and its key importance for European society and the economy Thanks a lot to the European Commission for the declaration and to the European Cyclists' Federation for all the effort around this huge milestone.

CIE CEO Kevin Mayne spoke today at the POLIS Network Cycling Declaration breakfast, alongside POLIS Secretary General Karen Vancluysen and European Cyclists' Federation CEO Jill Warren. The panel praised the #EUCyclingDeclaration as a pivotal policy document for the cycling community and covered several highlights:  📈 Recognition of the cycling industry's potential to contribute to economic growth 🤝 Building capacity and structures to support Europe’s growing cycling economy 🌐 The significance of collecting and using data to benchmark mobility policies and ridership 🚴♂️ The importance of developing multi-modal solutions focused on sustainable transport 🏡 Exploring new solutions for bike sharing in suburban areas   CIE’s expert groups have been pivotal to identify, discuss and promote policy solutions that enable cycling like the ones covered during today’s event. If you want to share your views and learn from peers across the industry, contribute to better cycling policies and collaborate on projects for the collective good of the industry, our door is open! In the meantime, we will strive to make sure that the #EUCyclingDeclaration delivers the positive change for the cycling industry and ridership it promises. 

Cycling is not only a cheap, sustainable and inclusive mode of transport. It can also help our #cities to become less polluted, quieter and more pleasant. Today we witness a milestone that will boost #cycling in 🇪🇺: all Member States and EU institutions signed the European Declaration on Cycling. It includes clear commitments, such as creating safe and coherent cycling networks, providing secure parking spaces or improving links with public transport. It is a good starting point, but please don't stop here. 1. Please add cycling infrastructure eligible in #CEFTransport railway and road projects. To make long distance cycling highways beside railway lines or highways would add max 1-2% extra to the implementation cost, but it could boost the inter-city cycling. 2. Also that could be important to make a priority in #CEFTransport for cross-border cycling routes. There is no possibilty to finance these projects now: - local goverments in neighboring countries cannot syncronise regional funds and - #Interreg is not big enough for infrastructure projects.

Today, the EU took a major step forward in promoting the most inclusive, affordable, and sustainable mode of transport: all Member States and EU institutions have signed the European Declaration on Cycling, the first inter-institutional cycling policy at the European level. It sets out 36 strong commitments such as creating safe and coherent cycling networks in cities, improving links with public transport, and providing secure cycle parking spaces and access to recharging points for eBikes.
