#FormulaE is already leading the way in terms of #Sustainability, with the Global Sustainability Benchmark in Sport report identifying it as a global sustainable leader, but how can the rest of the industry learn from its leadership, and what does Formula E still need to improve on?
FE has shown that it's possible to have a more environmentally-conscious motorsport, but it's still seen as an offshoot to the much more successful #F1. I think it's time for audiences to have their perceptions of EVs in motorsports challenged, and we need to do more to put this cleaner, greener sport front and centre in the oncoming years.
What predictions do you have for the future of sustainable sports events?
As a member of the American University community, sustainability is an important part of every piece of research, every program, class, and conversation. I decided to take a look at the issue of carbon emissions in my favorite motorsport series. Formula 1 is hailed as the pinnacle of motorsport, but It also has one of the world’s largest carbon footprints. Here’s how the racing behemoth is setting itself up for a more sustainable future.

⚡🔋 As promised -- Sustainability takeaways from F1R THE GIRLS Media's week with Formula E, McLaren Racing and the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team. In the spirit of the #olympics, we're going for gold, silver and bronze!
🥇 Positioning sustainability as performance-enhancing is a winning strategy for #motorsport teams, not just from the technical side but from the storytelling side, too. Teams that have adopted this framing are having more success moving their stakeholders, supply chains and fans along the Net Zero pathway.
🥈Efficiency and diversity are essential in nature... And biomimicry and natural materials are presenting exciting opportunities for next-gen motorsport tech and talent. We're talking the cultivation of sustainable career pipelines for new personnel from underrepresented groups, using motorsport know-how to create climate tech and more. Personally, it's very exciting to see the sport gearing up to solve biodiversity challenges!
🥉 Motorsport has work to do when it comes to uplifting sustainability champions. A diverse cohort of athletes from football, rugby and sailing have become vocal about climate change online in ways that have positively impacted the following of their sports. Creating an environment where drivers and creators can freely champion sustainability could create a sea-change for accountability, education and engagement around these issues in the racing world.
🏆 Best of the rest: Motorsport stakeholders (pros, fans and creators!) on both sides of the pond need more opportunities to connect with their international counterparts. There's a lot of knowledge-sharing to be done across borders that can increase collaboration and performance!
🏁 Being invited to explore Brackley and Woking enabled our team to see these these key themes in action and bring them to life for our audiences. A huge thank you to everyone involved! Check out the highlights from our visit to the McLaren Technology Center here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ejT4pRfU

🏁 As we embark on the 2024 #F1 season, which kicked off this past weekend in #Bahrain, the excitement and anticipation are substantial! This season promises to be a showcase of not only thrilling races but also the ongoing efforts of Formula 1 to embrace sustainability and inclusivity.
🏎️🌱 Buckle up for a thrilling ride into the new era of Formula 1!
Change is on the horizon as F1 steers towards a #netzero goal by 2030 through the adoption of E-Fuels and streamlined logistics. Let's dive into the comprehensive reform package reshaping the future of this iconic racing series:
🍃 While the financial allure and growing fanbase of F1 are undeniable, the environmental challenges are equally significant. #Racing contributes less than 1% of total F1 CO2 emissions, with a whopping 75% attributed to the logistics and travel involved in transporting teams and equipment to race venues all around the world. On top of the recent surge in races, 21 in 2018 to 23 in 2023, the average travel distance between races also increased by 15%.
The focus is now on addressing the environmental impact beyond the racetrack. By implementing #eFuels and optimizing logistical processes, Formula 1 aims to tackle the carbon footprint generated during its extensive global travels. The goal is clear: #NetZero2030.
▶ It's clear that F1 is not just a part of the problem but an integral part of the solution. As the racing world evolves, F1 needs to reinvent itself to meet #ESG goals and enable financial sustainability, ensuring that teams have a future.
