The news about the death of a Sumatran tiger in West Sumatra reported by Mongabay reminds us once again of how dangerous snares are. Although the installation of these snares is often justified as a means to reduce the population of wild boars that damage crops, snares cannot select their targets. Wild boars poaching often becomes the excuse for poachers who actually aim to poach tigers or their prey, which are protected by the Indonesia law. Snare removal patrols cannot keep up with the intensity of snare installation carried out by poachers in various tiger habitats and for various motives. Moreover, snares are easy to make, the materials are easy to obtain or purchase, can be produced in large quantities, are cheap, and can be set up anywhere. SCENTS encourages the implementation of a snare regulation that includes a ban on installing snares in tiger habitats, as well as monitoring snare producers, snare distribution, and snare users. This regulation also needs to be complemented with strict sanctions against violators. This will help control the reckless installation of snares, ensure that the distribution chain of snares can be monitored, and establish snare-free zones that protect tigers.

This challenge permeates the history of limnology in Latin American and the Caribbean and represents an excellent opportunity to meet developed and developing countries in bilateral and mutual support." #socialimpact

Got the opportunity and met at the Indonesian Ornamental Fish Festival, meeting many ornamental fish cultivators from the middle level to those who have reached the world. On this occasion I met with the Director General of KKP, Dr. rer. Nat. Budi Sulistyo, M.Sc. Several things must be the focus of ornamental fish cultivators, especially exports themselves, because there are many foreign buyers interested in Indonesian ornamental fish. However, there are also several obstacles in the process itself, both from the regulations of the destination country and vice versa. #ornamentalfish

It is with deep concern that we share news of the recent harassment faced by seaweed farmers in Sitio Marihangin Island, Philippines. These farmers, peacefully tending to their livelihoods, have been threatened and intimidated by masked, armed individuals purportedly linked to the development plans of San Miguel Corporation for a white beach resort. This incident is not an isolated one; it reflects a broader pattern where communities across the globe, particularly those residing on ancestral lands, are unjustly displaced in the name of development projects. The International Land Coalition (ILC) strongly condemns such actions. We stand in unwavering solidarity with the seaweed farmers of Sitio Marihangin Island and affirm their rights to their ancestral lands, livelihoods, and cultural heritage. The forced eviction and harassment of these communities are clear violations of human rights and international norms. ILC calls upon all stakeholders, including governments and corporations, to respect the rights of indigenous and local communities and to prioritize sustainable and inclusive development that does not come at the expense of vulnerable populations. We urge swift action to investigate and address this incident, ensure the safety and security of affected communities, and uphold justice and accountability for those responsible.
