Around the world there are countless barriers to healthcare, more than I can mention here. When advocating for change, are we being intersectional? I’m a white slim cis person working in the field of health and disability, and there’s major gaps in what this sector is talking about and tackling. It's important we're constantly thinking critically about the spaces we find ourselves in, and the work we ourselves are involved with. What are we talking about? How are we talking about them? What are we being silent on? Are we using gendered language unnecessarily? Are we neglecting to talk about the fact our experiences as white people are not universal? Are we raising awareness of prejudice against LGBTQIA+ people in healthcare? Are we talking about the lack of diversity in medical training and textbooks? Are we committed to Covid mitigation? Are we taking precautions, and advocating for them on a large scale? Are we acknowledging Covid as an access and inclusion issue as well as a public health disaster? (Yes, even in 2024). Are we making sure we're educating ourselves on what is happening to people in different parts of the world? Are we talking about the health implications of living under occupation? Hospitals in Palestine are being obliterated. Cancer centres made unreachable. Medical supplies made unavailable. Disease is spreading rapidly. What are we doing to challenge that? Are we talking about fatphobia and the negative health implications of weight stigma? Are we acknowledging the barriers unhoused or incarcerated people face accessing healthcare? Are we considering how racism is prevalent in our healthcare systems? Are we challenging the ways that finances and education impact a persons access to care and support? Are we advocating for health information to be accessible for people with different disabilities and communication needs than our own? What are we hoping to help change? Who are we changing it for? Global health stakeholders must address the huge inequalities/inequities experienced by persons with disabilities (PWDs-be it sensory/physical disabilities), by ensuring UHC remains a fundamental right through the ages. However we must recognise that: #NoUHCwithoutAccessToEHC Primary Ear & Hearing Care (EHC) must therefore be mandatorily included within Primary Health Care (PHC), so that UHC could be achieved in a comprehensive manner. This is especially pertinent within LMICs, (e.g. sub-Saharan Africa). UHC can be achieved when all healthcare providers (inclusive of Hearing health providers), community leaders, govts, donor-agencies, PWDs, CSOs & other self-help groups come together, to provide reliable & effective PHC which includes primary EHC! #PrimaryEHCmandatoryForUHC #UHCpanaceaForHealthInequalitiesNPHCDA

Quality of care and quality of life go hand in hand.

When you do this, you will not get dementia. EVER. Prevention is definitely cheaper and more sustainable than cure. Research shows that with exercise, we can: ✅ Reduces Breast Cancer risk by 20% ✅ Lowers Dementia risk by 28% ✅ Decreases Alzheimer's risk by 45% Yet... we still see people, young and old, opting for sedentary lifestyle. May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people (MMIWG2S), also known as "Red Dress Day," coined by Métis artist Jaime Black as "an aesthetic response to this critical national issue." The ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people that we are facing is a direct result of colonization. In Canada, more than six in ten (63%) Indigenous women have experienced physical or sexual assault in their lifetime. The impact of these disproportionately high rates of violence is felt in all areas of life. The effects on health and wellness include inequitable access and treatment in health care and underrepresentation in health research. Consistent with several of the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the calls to justice developed by the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, CIHR recognizes the importance of stepping up our efforts to build the research evidence that is critical for improving the health and wellness of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. Today on Red Dress Day, and every day, we honor the lives of MMIWG2S by raising awareness of this ongoing national tragedy, and we hold in our thoughts the families and communities who carry the weight and live with the grief of losing loved ones. The impact of #HoFH extends beyond health, affecting self-perception, education, and employment opportunities. Despite the challenges, many individuals and families affected by HoFH demonstrate resilience and adaptability. Empowerment through education, self-care practices, and advocacy can contribute to better psychosocial outcomes. Recognising these challenges underscores the importance of collective action in raising awareness and supporting research efforts. Though untreated HoFH may limit life expectancy on paper, it doesn't have to limit the impact of our compassion and advocacy.
