Another Former First Lady who deserves recognition this Women's History Month and International Women's Month (especially for her prominent role in the drafting of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is the bedrock of the various international human rights principles now also incorporated in business #humanrights standards) is Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Eleanor Roosevelt was active in the American Red Cross during World War I and in various women groups such as the League of Women Voters. During her husband's tenure, Eleanor Roosevelt became a champion of the poor, minorities and the disadvantaged. Following his death, Eleanor was appointed to the United Nations General Assembly and served as chair of the Human Rights Commission. Later still she was appointed to the National Advisory Committee of the Peace Corps and chair of the President's Commission on the Status of Women. From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, and the United States, March 8 celebrates the women’s rights movements. The origins of International Women’s Day can be traced to New York in 1908, where garment workers went on strike demand better pay and working conditions.....But in 1896, Black American activists Mary Church Terrell, Harriet Tubman, Frances E W Harper, and Ida Bell Wells-Barnett founded the National Association of Women of Color, which became a vehicle for Black women to advocate for equal pay, childcare provision, suffrage, and educational scholarships. Being one generation away from slavery, they formed a collectivist and cross-class alliance to fight against racial and gender-based violence in the Jim Crow era, including convict leasing, lynching, and debt peonage.   As we celebrate International Women's Day this year, it is important to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Black women, who have played an instrumental role in shaping history and promoting equality. Women like Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and Fannie Lou Hamer were instrumental in the fight for civil rights, while writers like Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison and musicians like Nina Simone and Beyoncé made significant contributions to the arts and culture. Black women entrepreneurs like Janice Bryant Howroyd and Ursula Burns are breaking barriers in business and inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. The Declaration of Independence in 1776 proclaimed that "all men are created equal," yet these rights were initially denied to many, including African Americans, Native Americans, women, and other minority groups. 🙌 The abolition of slavery in 1865 with the 13th Amendment marked a significant milestone. However, the struggle for equality continued, especially with the enforcement of Jim Crow laws. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, led by figures like Martin Luther King Jr., resulted in landmark legislation, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, dismantling legal segregation and securing voting rights. 👊 Women's rights saw significant progress with the 19th Amendment in 1920, granting women the right to vote. As Race Equality Week enters its second day, it prompts us to contemplate the impact of representation. Representation is the bedrock of diversity and inclusivity, offering individuals from various backgrounds the chance to see themselves reflected in society. This visibility fosters a deep sense of belonging and empathy, challenging stereotypes and biases along the way. Maybe that's why me and and my family do a wee happy dance every time we see the Sikh uncle on East Enders. Yet, for many of us from Black, Ethnic, and Minority backgrounds, being the sole representative in social or professional circles is not uncommon. We are the representation. Despite the odds, individuals from ethnically diverse backgrounds have shattered barriers, demonstrating that potential transcends the constraints of visibility. They are the principle that one can indeed be what they cannot see! As we advocate for greater representation, let us also embrace the notion that we can become the very representation we seek. By doing so, we not only empower ourselves but also pave the way for others to follow in our footsteps.
