I took part in Food Tech Congress in Warsaw. It was a very insightful event, with over 800 participants from more than 40 countries. For the first time I was part of the jury for start ups competition. I was voting in two tracks, New Proteins and Food Waste. Such companies I had a chance to meet during the event are part of the food the business at which I do not look at so closely everyday. I saw over 30 pitches in total and all of them brought a good value that I believe could be very useful in the food value chains. I really liked there were many B2B proposals that were addressing problems of big business value. Congratulations to all the winners! My personal favorites were: - RDI - produces irrigation and fertigation systems that allow water use that is self-regulated by plants, they already have impressive results even in desert environments, systems are undersurfaced and multiseasonal; - Perfat Technologies - develop and produces value added fat solutions for the food industry, they transform vegetable oils into solid fats that could e.g. replace butter in food industry, their processes are purely physical, very impressive; - Mimica - they make Bump, which is a temperature-sensitive cap or tag providing an accurate indication of freshness, so you do not need assume your worst-case scenario for expiration, I see it as something which could materially improve economics of fresh or chilled meat; - Rebread - adress bread waste, I like the value added offered which is in-house developed product technology which is then implemented for customers (could be e.g. bakeries or retail) with and advisory project
All winners of Food Tech Challengers 2024 are revealed! 🥳 🍖 New Proteins - Perfat Technologies 🍏 Enhancing well-being via nutrition - EXOSOMM 🔒 Food Transparency, safety & security - inoqo 👨🌾 Regenerative agriculture - RDI ♻️ Food Waste - Koolboks 🍽 Digital from farm to fork - RootWave Congrats to the superfinalists! #FTC2024

⚡ Smart collaboration will unlock cultivated meat. Here’s why and how... 💰 Cultivated meat needs extreme efficiency at extraordinary scale. A critical example is media, which must be optimised for productivity and available by the tonne at a price enabling parity on the supermarket shelf. 💲The price needs to drop below 1 dollar per litre. Today, the typical cost is 10-100 times too much. ❓ How can we make the media affordable? 🤝 The key to tackling the cost of media - and similar scaling challenges - is deep collaboration to exploit complementary strengths. ⬇️ Some of our past and current collaboration projects include: ⚗️ Partnering with Quest on a £1-million cultivated meat scale-up project. 🖥️ Teaming up with New Wave Biotech to consider methods to scale cultivated meat production using AI. 🥼 Leading a consortium on safety funded by Innovate UK. The project is advancing the development of global standards for food-safe growth media formulations and ingredients. 🧫 Launching the first licence-free cell bank dedicated to cultivated meat with Extracellular. 🌟 By coming together, we can accelerate the industry to make cultivated meat a sustainable, affordable and available alternative. ➡️ Click here to read more about our work: https://www.multus.bio/ #CultivatedMeat #CellularAgriculture #SustainableFoodSystems #GrowthMedia

🌍 Empowering youth through action learning programs: addressing their concerns 🤝, linking them to experts 🔍, solving community issues important to them 🏘, and amplifying their voices in decisions making 💬
There has been a number of conversations about new food technologies and the money that's been invested in them. I find the technology exciting and think it has potential. If the LinkedIn comments on the posts I saw are anything to go by I am an anomaly. I blogged my thoughts which are also below https://lnkd.in/gzXttJzt Embracing Innovation Selectively. The Dichotomy in Agriculture 🌾⚙️ The agricultural sector prides itself on innovation, particularly when it directly benefits its traditional practices and enhances productivity. However, there seems to be a dichotomy when it comes to embracing broader innovations that might challenge the status quo. For instance, the industry expresses apprehension towards cultured meat, plant-based milk, and meat alternatives, perceiving them as threats rather than potential collaborators or complementary sectors. This selective approach to innovation highlights a resistance to change that extends beyond its immediate benefits to the industry itself. 🥩🌱 It’s crucial for agriculture to not only innovate within its comfort zone but also to engage with and understand broader developments that are reshaping the global food landscape. This willingness to explore and adapt to external innovations can open new opportunities for growth and collaboration, ensuring the industry’s relevance and resilience in a rapidly changing world. Global Sustainability Executive (Chief ESG/Sustainability Officer | VP) ◆ Commercialization ◆ Strategic Partnerships ◆ Spokesperson ◆ Culture & People Champion
Last week I had the opportunity to attend the Innovation Forum's Future of Food and Beverage conference and connect with farmers, customers and other agricultural supply chain partners. It was great to share a bit about Cargill's ambition and approach to making #RegenerativeAgriculture common place across our supply chains. We believe that one size does not necessarily fit all. It is important to recognize that every landscape and every farm is different. These differences can be driven by soil type, commodity grown, acres, equipment available, weather variability, and even community characteristics. That’s why our approach is to understand the landscape and to partner with farmers to support them in adopting practices that will work best for their specific operations and location.

Lab/factory cultured meat is probably the future of much of the world’s protein supply. The current leading source of protein is factory farming of animals, birds and fish. And this has created significant environmental and other problems. Most of the animals suffer too. But we are far away from making affordable lab grown meat. And it is not a real alternative unless it can be cheaper than farmed meat for the consumer. Plant based meat substitutes simply don’t make the cut and will remain niche products. Most meat eaters will always prefer the real thing. Besides, plant based meat substitutes are highly processed foods - an attribute that the consumers increasingly avoid. This new approach demonstrated by the South Korean researchers is a huge breakthrough in making lab grown animal protein. They have broken through the cost barriers. It will be very interesting to see how this technique can scale up. https://lnkd.in/d45rbriD
