Two months ago I had the pleasure of sitting next to Michael Peel at an IPAA ACT Secretary Series event with Adam Fennessy PSM. Adam is Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, a nearly 7,000-strong organisation with a distributed and diverse workforce that includes biosecurity officers, detector dogs, entomologists, vets, lawyers, policy analysts and financial accountants. Collectively they support $100 billion in agricultural production each year, with just over three quarters in exports. As Adam said during his address, the Department works in a "very complex and exciting space" that "requires skills in our organisation to work closely with communities and very importantly work closely across our own organisation". He described how the Department had put a lot of effort into developing a statement of strategic intent over the last year. "It's important for us to know our why, to know why we're here, to connect across Australia and also really motivate our staff and give our staff that connection to passion about what we do... we put a lot of focus on what is our story, how do we tell our story, how do we excite our staff? How do we motivate our staff?". The focus of the Department's statement of strategic intent is 'Growing Australia together' which links to its purpose, vision and three strategic objectives: 1. supporting our agriculture sector to be prosperous and internationally competitive 2. increasing the contribution of agriculture, fisheries and forestry for healthy, sustainable and lower emissions productivity 3. the protection around national biosecurity and providing the appropriate level of protection for our people, our environment, and our economy. I thought the development of a statement of strategic intent was a really neat solution to a complex organisational issue with lots of moving parts and different internal and external drivers. Knowing the 'why', 'how' and 'what' of an organisation is such an enabler of the 'when' and the 'who'. I hadn't come across the approach Adam described before but it is certainly one that will stay with me. For those interested in hearing Adam speak, or reading a transcript of his address and the conversation which followed, visit the web page below.

It encompasses innovative sectors that span agriculture, fisheries, forestry, and biobased industries. However, deploying its full potential requires addressing complex governance and policy challenges, as highlighted in the newly published ShapingBio report Policy and Governance. In this report, three in-depth analyses with nine case studies were conducted to gain a deeper understanding of bioeconomy governance and bioeconomy policy coordination in six EU member states. The aim was to identify good practice and to contribute to draft recommendations on how policy making in this complex environment could be improved. Read more here 👉https://lnkd.in/dP-kUxQn

Great session IPAA ACT and Adam Fennessy PSM, for those not able to attend - worth watching when the video comes out - if for no other reason but to learn about how McDonald's Australia helped maintain egg supply during the recent avian flu outbreaks, and other interesting facts about working at Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Along with knowing "why" and the need to know our purpose, a number of things particularly struck me: - The need for an evidence based approach to how organisations and leaders deal with flexible working arrangements, especially working from home! - well supported trusted staff wherever they work are high performing - laughter is a good indicator of a productive workplace - Drive into the skid (for those of us who grew up driving on WA ball bearing dirt roads this is particularly meaningful 😁). For so many leaders, how to manage a distributed workforce, including working from home, is a challenge, and many of us learnt on the job and worse, during COVID, - but whether working from home or just where our job takes us its important that we do this well to deliver for Australia and for worker satisfaction. We need to train and support leaders and teams to do this well, not assume it's natural, and use evidence and research to inform this training. That said - you cannot go wrong with being kind, listening and engaging teams in how they work, plus as Adam said - trust and support.
Why does purpose matter, and what’s Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Adam Fennessy PSM’s ‘why’? Adam has always been motivated by the immediate connection with community and purpose. Here are some more key points from his address: 🌻Knowing your ‘why’ helps you make decisions about where you want to take your career 🌻The majority of Agriculture’s staff are based outside of Canberra – it’s important to help them stay connected 🌻Staff roles are very varied: biosecurity experts, scientists, trade negotiators, veterinarians, policy analysts and lawyers 🌻Agriculture is an economic development agency with a vision for a more prosperous and sustainable Australia 🌻 The three strategic objectives of Growing Australia Together: 👉supporting Australia’s agricultural sector to be increasingly prosperous and internationally competitive 👉increasing the contribution agriculture, fisheries and forestry make to a healthy, sustainable and low-emissions environment 👉 strengthening our national biosecurity system to provide a risk-based approach and an appropriate level of protection for our people, environment and economy 🌻Flexible work remains a priority, it is the new normal 🌻Trusted staff perform the best 🌻Pay attention to your staff who work in remote locations and ensure you stay connected 🌻The level of laughter is a good indicator of a healthy workplace 🌻Tune into research and look at the evidence base 🌻Economic inclusion of First Nations peoples is a focus point for the department 🌻Agriculture needs to balance industry needs with broad Australian values #IPAASecretarySeries #IPAAEvents

The #Japanese government published a draft Article 6.2 methodology for issuing carbon credits from projects that improve water management and cut #GreenhouseGasEmissions in Philippine rice paddy fields, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said in a statement June 28, marking the first step toward extending Japan's Article 6.2 mechanism into the agriculture sector. Article 6.2 is an UN-backed mechanism that allows two countries to sign bilateral agreements to transfer emission mitigation outcomes across national boundaries. Countries can either choose existing methodologies in the international voluntary carbon market or design new, tailormade methodologies under their bilateral programs.
