The 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States #SIDS4 was a great success! #UNIDO was closely involved in the preparation of the Conference and participated with a delegation led by Director General Gerd Müller. The new 10-year Action Plan, the "Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS“ #ABAS sets out an ambitious path for sustainable development for #SIDS. A key objective of the ABAS is to build sustainable, resilient and diversified blue, green and digital economies with the ability to tap into higher added value sectors and to leapfrog to innovative technologies. It addresses SIDS unique challenges stemming from small size, remote location, narrow resource base and vulnerability to external shocks, particularly climate change impacts and rising fossil fuel and food import prices. Getting better and fairer access to finance for SIDS is a critical aspect of the Agenda and all efforts for sustainable development in SIDS. UNIDO’s key contributions to #SIDS4: 👉 DG Müller presented UNIDO’s expertise and concrete new initiatives like the new UNIDO Global SIDS Hub in Barbados to support the implementation of ABAS and called on industrialized countries to deliver on climate finance and ODA commitments for SIDS. MESTRI-CE 🤝 liaises with the EU-level Local Alliance initiative 🌍 🌍 FEDARENE and seven additional leading networks of European cities and regions - ACR+, CEMR, Climate Alliance, Energy Cities, Eurocities, ICLEI Europe, and POLIS - have come together to form the Local Alliance. This EU-level initiative aims to find new ways to effectively roll out and finance the European Green Deal 💶 at the local level. REGEA has presented the main findings from MESTRI-CE's financing baselines and gap analysis 📊, including the building sector's key barriers 🚧 and opportunities 🌱 for innovative financing models. The Local Alliance initiative is currently focusing on mapping the Structural Funds 🗺️ and discussing what works ✅ – what does not work 🚫 – what possible future scenarios are, and what the Alliance can recommend to the European Commission 🏛️. Investments in productive chains in renewable energies and green industries that promote employment and sustainable development are some of the work opportunities that Bolivia can take advantage of in its relationship with the European Union. This was highlighted in a webinar organised by the Prisma Group, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the EU-LAC Foundation on Friday 19 April. In his opening remarks, the Executive Director of the EU-LAC Foundation, Dr. Adrián Bonilla, highlighted the dynamism of the political dialogue at the EU-CELAC Summit in Brussels last July. At the meeting, agreements were established for joint work on issues such as sustainable development, security, public health, environment, digitalisation and social equity, among others. During the virtual seminar, the Global Investment Agenda and the EU-LAC Digital Alliance were also addressed, which would allow the mobilisation of public and private resources in the aforementioned areas. The exploratory event served as a space for the exchange of ideas that could be taken into account in Bolivia's relations with the EU. More information on the Andean countries' relations with the EU can be found in the recording of the seminar "Opportunities for cooperation between the EU and the Andean countries", organised by the EU-LAC Foundation and the General Secretariat of the Andean Community on 8 February.
