Brilliant to attend the Brain Tumour Research 2024 manifesto launch last night in parliament. A very well organised, attended and managed session that was supported by both politicians and members of the APPGBT (the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Brain Tumours). The new manifesto can be found here https://lnkd.in/etVhdtCZ. On page two you can see the disparity between Breast Cancer and Leukaemia funding, and that given to Brain Cancers. The improvements in 10 year survival rates following diagnosis from 1971-2011 is stark and shows why so much more focus is still required on Brain Tumours. I’ve added some key information in the comments, and outlined the difference that Brain Tumour Research is looking to make. The passion and drive from key people across charity, industry and politics was clear last night, and we need to now turn that passion into very effective action. It is clear that the original commitments haven’t been met in improving things, and a real collective drive is required to make this happen. There are very personal stories behind every family impacted, and excellent insight was also provided right across the spectrum of stakeholders last night including politicians (including Guy Opperman https://lnkd.in/eYwQVyUS and Derek Thomas), those impacted (like Craig Russell https://lnkd.in/eUtp8M8c) and those working so hard to make a difference (like Babar Vaqas https://lnkd.in/eTXx9Bqh). #BrainTumourCure

We already know that this is a stroke, why must he do a brain scan? Some patient relations have asked me this question and I have had to explain that we need to confirm the type of stroke, as it determines the type of treatment we can offer within the first few days of hospital admission. Another important reason is that it might not be a stroke after all! Certain brain 🧠 conditions mimic strokes and one of the closest mimics is a brain tumour. Some brain tumours can present with sudden-onset symptoms just like a stroke, without other symptoms noted before then. The only way to be certain is by doing a brain scan, CT scan or MRI as the case may be. Brain tumours are treatable and factors such as the location of the tumour, early detection and early treatment determine the outcome of treatment. May is Brain Tumor Awareness Month. Understanding the Silent Battle: What Is Cancer? Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. These cells can invade and destroy normal tissues and organs, leading to serious health problems. Cancer can develop in almost any part of the body and may form a lump or mass called a tumor. Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not spread to other body parts and are not considered cancer. There are two main types of tumors: Benign Tumors: These are non-cancerous and do not spread to other body parts. They are usually localized and can often be removed through surgery. Malignant Tumors: These are cancerous and have the potential to invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream or lymphatic system. A #MalignantFibrousHistiocytoma (#MFH) is a type of #cancer most often found in soft tissue such as muscles and tendons. In very rare cases it starts in bones. When this happens, it is most often in the leg bones. Cancer cells start to take over and destroy the bone. This may cause the bone to break. You might hear this condition called a #PleomorphicUndifferentiatedSarcoma. That is its newer name. ~ What Causes It, and Who is at Risk? These #tumours may be linked to other medical conditions such as #PagetDisease, certain #chemotherapy treatments, or past #RadiationTreatments. But it is not clear what causes them. They can happen at any age but are most common in older adults. ~ What Are the Symptoms? Malignant fibrous histiocytoma symptoms are not noticeable at the onset of the disease because the tumour affects elastic tissue that can be easily moved. For this reason, the tumour may exist and grow quite large before it is discovered. Symptoms usually show when the tumour starts to compress surrounding structures. When this happens, patients notice: • A painless, growing palpable mass • Soreness caused by compressed muscles or nerves • Difficulty walking if the tumour is found on the legs • Decreased range of motion • Some patients also experience chills, fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss. The symptoms mentioned above are not definitive signs of MFH. Other less serious conditions can also produce such symptoms.
