Defense Minister Minoru Kihara told reporters that two SH-60K helicopters of the Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF), carrying four crew members each, lost contact late Saturday near Torishima Island, about 600 kilometers south of Tokyo. . Kihara said that the cause of this accident is not yet known but both the helicopters probably fell into the water after colliding with each other.

He said rescuers recovered a flight data recorder, a blade from each helicopter and fragments from both helicopters in the same area, indicating that the two Sh-60Ks were flying close to each other. Authorities will analyze flight data to determine what caused the crash. MSDF deployed eight warships and five aircraft to search and rescue the missing crew members.
