2025 means that fuel producers must now start supplying Sustainable Aviation Fuel as part of the #ReFuel EU Regulation. Producers must ensure that 2% of the fuel they supply for aircraft is #SAF. Our Policy Director Monika Rybakowska spoke with Rachel Millard from Financial Times on how 2025 is a year of adjustment for the airline industry and that legislation like ReFuel EU should be there to make flying better and more sustainable and not more expensive or restricted. Airlines in Europe are using more sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) than their competitors in the USA and elsewhere, according to a BNN Bloomberg report. Although many airlines have pledged to get at least 10% of their jet fuel from cleaner sources by the end of the decade, SAF use increased from 0.04% of global aviation fuel in 2021 to 0.17% in 2023, according to estimates from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Higher SAF use by European airlines was partly due to a government mandate, with the European Union (EU) requiring airlines to use 2% SAF from next year, the 19 August report said. #saf #sustainableaviationfuel #us #eu #airlines #aviation #iata #airports #aviationindustry #airlineindustry

Some 87% of airlines are failing in the transition to sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), new data from Transport & Environment (T&E) has found. "Too few airlines are committing to truly sustainable fuels. The majority are either buying the wrong types of fuels or, worse still, no SAF at all," commented Francesco Catte, SAF manager at T&E. #airlines #fuel #transport #aviation #saf T&E France (Transport & Environment) Read more: https://lnkd.in/ez9v93nh

"DHL Group leads the world in SAF adoption, getting more than 3% of its aviation fuel from cleaner sources last year. To achieve this, the Bonn, Germany-based cargo carrier purchased more lower-emission jet fuel than all US airlines combined." This is a great result for DHL in 2023 and I am proud to be part of the team that made it possible. But as pleased as I am with our success, I am disappointed with the performance of the aviation industry as a whole. How on earth can a German cargo airline buy more SAF than ALL US airlines combined, while at the same time the US is the most competitive country for the production and use of SAF and offers many incentives and tax cuts? This is ridiculous. The excuse that there is no supply is just not true anymore. Many of these airlines have set a 10% SAF target for 2030 and that's not going to happen overnight - they need to start getting serious about this. https://lnkd.in/eZpHpwJt

REGISTER TO ACCELERATE SAF ADOPTION 🍃 The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced the creation of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Registry, aimed at accelerating the adoption of SAF by providing authoritative accounting and reporting on emissions reductions. The registry, which is set to launch in the first quarter of 2025, has already garnered support from seventeen airlines, one airline group, six national authorities, three Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and one fuel producer. IATA sees this as a significant step towards aviation’s ambitious decarbonisation goals through greater visibility of the progress that’s made. By 2050, SAF is expected to contribute up to 65 percent of the total carbon mitigation required to reach net-zero emissions in air transportation. “SAF is key to aviation’s decarbonisation. Airlines want more SAF and stand ready to use every drop,” Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, stated. “The SAF registry will help meet the critical needs of all stakeholders as part of the global effort to ramp-up SAF production. https://lnkd.in/emSDwgqc #AirCargo #AirFreight #SupplyChain #Logistics #AirCargoWeek #SustainableAviationFuel #NetZeroEmissions #SAFRegistry #ClimateAction #Airlines #AviationIndustry

It's fascinating to be at Aviation Carbon Events on the sharp end of the discussions around how you deliver sustainability within the aviation sector. It's apparent that a lot of clever people, companies and organisations have the will and intention to make tangible change. This includes industry bodies, government, airlines, finance, lessors. But the complicated, international, inter-organisational nature of the challenge is also apparent and it's only by close collaboration that the goals will be achieved. https://lnkd.in/gNjDTTVP
We're at Aviation Carbon Events today and the Environment Agency is going deep on emission reduction and ETS claims for airlines and the criteria for claiming for the use of #SAF. The penalties for non compliance or miss reporting are onerous and for those outside the industry this demonstrates a seriousness by policy makers to implement more sustainable systems for aviation. It places significant obligations on airlines by way of reporting, with potentially catastrophic outcomes if reporting is missed or incorrect. There is a sense that new ground is being broken with systems for reporting being updated on an ongoing basis. The processes are very complex and detailed and there appears to be lots of room for errors to be made.

International Air Transport Association (IATA) to establish SAF registry The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that it plans to setup a sustainable aviation fuel registry to report and account for remission reductions. “The SAF Registry will help meet the critical needs of all stakeholders as part of the global effort to ramp-up SAF production. Governments need a trusted system to track the quality and quantities of SAF used,” said Willie Walsh, director general, IATA. The association said that SAF producers need to accurately account for SAF delivered. While corporate users also require transparency while accounting for their Scope 3 emissions reduced via SAF. #SAFAviation #SustainableAviationFuel #CleanAviation #ReduceCarbonEmissions #NetZeroAviation #AviationSustainability #DecarbonizeAviation #FutureOfAviation #SustainableTravel Read full below. https://lnkd.in/eJmkbdZC

✈️ European Airlines Leading in Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Usage 🌍 A BNN Bloomberg report highlights how European airlines are ahead of U.S. carriers in adopting Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). While airlines globally aim to use 10% SAF by 2030, actual usage grew from 0.04% in 2021 to 0.17% in 2023. European airlines are leading this effort, spurred by government regulations like the EU's mandate for 2% SAF usage starting next year. In contrast, the U.S. government offers incentives without requiring SAF adoption, slowing down progress. SAF is still about three times the cost of conventional jet fuel. Air France-KLM led passenger airlines with 1.1% SAF use last year, and DHL Group took the top spot globally with 3% of its fuel from SAF. U.S. airlines are working to increase SAF usage, but the high cost remains a challenge, although production has doubled in 2024. 👉 Learn more:https://lnkd.in/eUN5xrqQ Hashtags: #SustainableAviation #SAF #GreenAviation #Airlines #NetZeroTravel #SustainableFuels #Aviation

Check out this piece on Sustainable Aviation Fuel written by my colleagues Robin Wallich and Joe Brown! #FlightPaths #Aviation #AviationFinance
Sustainable aviation fuel has been a major beneficiary of the Inflation Reduction Act, but what will happen under a Trump presidency? In this short piece Joe Brown and I argue that incentives for SAF are likely to remain in place. Combined with regulation in Europe and elsewhere, SAF is here to stay and will continue to be a major area of expansion as airlines and their customers look to reduce their carbon footprint. #Aviation #AviationFinance #SustainableAviationFuel

The book-and-claim system in #sustainable #aviation fuel (SAF) allows airlines to support the use of such fuel when it is not physically available at their location. While #SAF production is still growing worldwide, this solution can help to reduce #carbonemissions on a global scale and enables airlines to meet #sustainability goals without the logistical challenges of directly sourcing SAF at every #airport. This article gives us a very interesting overview about what's going on in this sector. #bookandclaim
