With electric vehicle (EV) ownership up almost 200 percent in two years, how will the electricity network effectively manage peak network demands while keeping power affordable and reliable for customers? It’s a question not just relevant for us here in Auckland, but also for other towns, cities and rural communities, across New Zealand.   Our CEO, Simon MacKenzie, recently joined Susie Ferguson on RNZ's Saturday Morning podcast, to talk about how our newly created ‘Electric vehicle trend tracker’ is crucial to helping us monitor the growth of EVs by area and how that information helps us to plan for the future.   ‘…As it currently stands, we’re meeting all the demand for the EVs, but as the number of EVs increases over the years, then we need to look at how we can apply smart charging to them, such that when people plug in, they’re not all plugging in at the same point in time and creating a significant amount of load on the network.
