A potential Oregon offshore wind lease is garnering interest, perhaps akin to the level expressed in the California leases. International players not currently invested in U.S. offshore wind are studying constraints, value, and risk. As we saw in the past two auctions, not all potential bidders participate in the auction; however, the information they gather during the process of looking into the WEAs includes project constructability, approval timeline, and cost. 🚨 Nine offshore wind projects secure contracts in biggest ever CfD auction 🚨 The long-awaited sixth Contracts for Difference (CfD) auction round has seen a record 131 projects receive funding. Two new offshore wind farms – Hornsea Four and East Anglia Two phase one – secured contracts, along with seven permitted reduction projects, after the technology was completely absent from last year’s auction. There were also successful bids from 22 onshore wind farms, 93 solar projects, six tidal stream schemes and one floating offshore wind farm. In total, 9.6GW was procured through the auction, with just over half of that capacity coming from offshore wind.

An interesting article by Westwood Global Energy Group highlights that the energy transition is creating additional competition for an already congested seabed. In the UK offshore sector we will see increased competition between carbon storage sites, wind farm sites and oil and gas (O&G) sites. Future (TBC) O&G licences offered by the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) will only add to this congestion. 🚦 It is envisaged that operational issues may arise due to the clash of wind farm construction activities with planned activity at the O&G and carbon storage sites, e.g. as drilling equipment and pipelines can potentially interfere with the placement and operation of wind turbines. Further issues are envisaged during O&M activities due to competition for marine space for vessels. 🚢 However, the article also highlights a number of opportunities for collaboration and innovation which may lead to cost and time efficiencies, for example: ✔ the electrification of platforms via wind farms on shared sites ✔sharing data on the characteristics of shared sites ✔utilising similar components such as foundations, topsides, and power cables across wind and oil and gas projects The last of these ties in with a much greater opportunity presented by the energy transition to innovative companies.
