#2023ConservationWins: In the Arctic, we saw continued progress on creating the nearly 90,000-square-kilometre Aqviqtuuq Inuit Protected and Conserved Area. The Coral Triangle Conservation Fund is in development as a private, legally independent Conservation Trust Fund to support the Coral Triangle countries in their 30 x 30 ambitions (Target 3 of the #GlobalBiodiversityFramework). This time last year, we played a pivotal role in the Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement Pilot Project, a groundbreaking initiative focused on revitalizing tidal marsh fish habitat in the Fraser River estuary. We’re also thrilled to be currently working on Phase 2! Here's a quick recap in case you missed it: 🚢 Dredging Expertise: Our skilled crews repurposed sediment dredged from the Fraser River, strategically depositing it on the tidal flats to support natural processes vital for habitat restoration. 🌱 Environmental Impact: By restoring crucial wild Pacific salmon tidal marsh habitat, we helped sustain a diverse ecosystem, benefiting species like the Fraser River Chinook salmon and the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. 💼 Community Collaboration: Teaming up with Ducks Unlimited Canada, Raincoast Conservation Foundation, Tsawwassen First Nation, and the Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance, we contributed to flood protection for Richmond while preserving essential coastal marshlands. Indigenous Ranger initiatives are a source of inspiration for many around the globe. Drawing on the successful Indigenous conservation practices seen in the Dhimurru Indigenous Protected Area in Australia and the Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) by the Mamalilikulla First Nation in British Columbia, Canada, three tribes from California's northern coastline—the Resighini Tribe of the Yurok People, the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation, and the Cher-Ae Heights Indian Community of the Trinidad Rancheria—have pioneered the United States' first Indigenous Marine Stewardship Area (IMSA). Spanning nearly 700 square miles of marine and coastal areas, this groundbreaking initiative is a testament to their commitment to safeguarding and rejuvenating their ancestral marine and coastal environments, firmly rooted in their sovereign rights and without necessitating approval from the U.S. government. This effort not only sets a precedent for Indigenous-led environmental conservation in the U.S. but also illustrates the importance of traditional harvesting and the safeguarding of cultural sites within the IMSA. Today, representatives from the Seal River Watershed Alliance, Indigenous Nations, the Federal government and the Province of Manitoba signed a MOU to explore the feasibility of establishing an #IPCA & a potential national park reserve in the Seal River Watershed! The watershed spans almost 43,000km2, contributing 0.4% of lands protected towards Canada's 30 by 2030 goal, and is home to 25 #SpeciesAtRisk. Traditional Knowledge, coupled with science, will be used as the foundation for the feasibility assessment of the potential Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area, with extensive knowledge and leadership from the Seal River Watershed Alliance. This is a historic step for ecosystem-level protection built on collaboration with Indigenous Nations and non-Indigenous stewards, and we look forward to updates on this endeavour.
