This time last year, we played a pivotal role in the Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement Pilot Project, a groundbreaking initiative focused on revitalizing tidal marsh fish habitat in the Fraser River estuary. We’re also thrilled to be currently working on Phase 2! Here's a quick recap in case you missed it: 🚢 Dredging Expertise: Our skilled crews repurposed sediment dredged from the Fraser River, strategically depositing it on the tidal flats to support natural processes vital for habitat restoration. 🌱 Environmental Impact: By restoring crucial wild Pacific salmon tidal marsh habitat, we helped sustain a diverse ecosystem, benefiting species like the Fraser River Chinook salmon and the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales. 💼 Community Collaboration: Teaming up with Ducks Unlimited Canada, Raincoast Conservation Foundation, Tsawwassen First Nation, and the Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance, we contributed to flood protection for Richmond while preserving essential coastal marshlands. We're shell-elebrating #WorldSeaTurtleDay by highlighting turtley-cool project led by the Wellesley Island Rangers! The Wellesley Islands are in Queensland’s lower Gulf of Carpentaria. The area is a critical breeding and feeding place for vulnerable green turtles. Rangers are working with the Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation and CSIRO to better understand: 🐢 the nesting turtle population 🐢 the threats these turtles are facing. Climate change is the biggest threat to marine turtles around the world. The rangers are currently: 🐢 restoring turtle nests 🐢 assessing turtle health 🐢 undertaking long-term monitoring to inform conservation actions 🐢 understanding impacts of threats including climate change and pressure from predators 🐢 identifying important feeding areas, habitat use, and movement patterns for female nesting turtles All these projects will help guide the adaptive management of the Wellesley Islands green turtles into the future. The program is funded through our Marine Turtle Climate Change Resilience and Nest Protection Program. These fish are a sign of healthy reefs and ocean ecosystems, and making sure the Nassau grouper can flourish helps secure clean water, living corals and robust seagrass beds. The protection and conservation of the Nassau Grouper in Biscayne Bay are not just about preserving a single species, it's about safeguarding an entire ecosystem. Their survival ensures the continuation of a complex web of life beneath the waves, vital for the overall health of our oceans. A new study will launch to examine the health of reef systems in marine protected areas in Papua New Guinea.

The Ahousaht and Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations and the BC government have announced that 187,800 acres of old-growth forests—including trees over 1,000 years old—would be permanently protected. The conservancies will nearly double forest protections in Clayoquot Sound. The lands will be managed by the First Nations, who joined with activists to blockade industrial logging in the 1980s and 1990s, as way to prevent destruction of the forests. Old-growth ecosystems provide a broad range of goods and services, including carbon sequestration and storage, and reduced wildfire risk, and essential habitat for salmon and wildlife. #indigenousmanagement https://ow.ly/pXkC50SC5hV

The Coral Triangle Conservation Fund (CTCF) is the only regional trust fund to focus on the Coral Triangle region. Home to an unparalleled diversity of marine life, this region is often called 'the Nursery of the seas' as it hosts 35% of the world's most resilient reefs and hence is critical in repopulating other reefs in the face of climate change. The marine resources within the Coral Triangle also directly sustain the livelihood of more than 120 million people.  Yet, despite the region’s importance, it remains severely underfunded. This is where the CTCF comes in. As a regional fund backed by the The Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI-CFF), the CTCF facilitates groundbreaking collaborative conservation efforts across six nations,  to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030.  #CoralTriangle #ForCoral #OceanConservation #30x30 #SDG14 Image Credit: Tracy Jennings/ Ocean Image Bank

Hopeful news! 🦌 The expanded Klinse-za/Twin Sisters protected area, roughly a third the size of Banff National Park, will help provide the caribou in the Peace River region in Treaty 8 territory with the refuge they need to recover to self-sustaining levels. Thirty-six other threatened and endangered species, including a vulnerable population of grizzly bears, wolverine, bull trout, and fisher, will also benefit from the protections. The Indigenous-led work of the West Moberly First Nations and Saulteau First Nations to save the Klinse-za mountain caribou herd is a model for saving endangered species everywhere. The new protected area has emerged as another inspiring example of the power of co-operation, of Indigenous-led conservation, and land-based reconciliation.
