Japan's goal of attracting 60 million annual visitors by 2030 may seem a long way off, but the country is already facing the challenges of over-tourism. The famous omotenashi hospitality is being put to the test with recent examples from Kyoto and Mount Fuji. It's clear that a pricing strategy alone won't solve the problem. Japan needs to develop a business and location strategy that adapts to different types of tourism and guests. As Japan's tourism numbers remain below pre-pandemic levels, the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) introduces a fresh strategy to attract its primary visitors- The Chinese tourist. Teaming up with major brands like Shiseido, Hoshino Resorts, and Japan Airlines, JNTO launches a WeChat mini program named "Appreciate Beautiful Japan". 🌸 Chinese tourists have historically made up 30% of Japan's inbound visitors. With current numbers at just 20% of pre-pandemic figures, this initiative aims to reignite interest and adapt to the evolving consumer sentiment. 🌐

Lunar New Year is travel time in China! The country is experiencing a surge in domestic tourism not only during this period. Here are three ingredients which attract travelers boosting the local economy: 🏖️ Beach & Sun: The island Hainan attracted 90 million visitors in 2023. That’s more than the entire population of Germany 🧊 Unique Experiences: The city Harbin in China’s northeast with its annual ice sculpture festival was visited by 3 million people during the long weekend from Dec 30 to Jan 1. That’s half of the people coming to the Octoberfest only within 3 days with outside temperatures of -20°C ⛩️ Nostalgia: The TV drama “Blossoms Shanghai” taking place in Shanghai in the early 1990s brings up memories of the boom years for its fans. This hype made places where the drama is set becoming tourist attractions only weeks after its release end of 2023. Restaurants and hotels featured on the drama are booked out months in advance and other venues are offering Blossoms themed activities. It seems that this drama series boosted the featured venues more than any commercial could have done. 🧳 Personal experience: Despite tourist attractions can be very crowded in China, there are still some secrets like the city Shangri-La or the rice terraces in Yuanyang which are not discovered by the masses yet.
