DST, which integrates digital control systems and smart grid technologies into substations, represents a significant leap from traditional analog systems. Recent research shows that about 36% more energy can be obtained by tracking the motion of sun by using tracking solar panels as compared to a solar panel at a fixed position. In the real world, the tracking process would be governed and controlled by programmable logic controller (PLC) where two stepper motors are used to guide the motion of the solar panel in azimuth (the angle between North, measured clockwise around the observer's horizon, and a celestial body, in this case the sun) and elevation angle. Automatic solar tracking is providing better performance than fixed solar panel and maximum surplus energy was obtained at about 36%. An automatic solar tracking system can easily be employed in industry and suitable for mass energy production, a higher start up cost with the implementation of PLC programmers among other various factors but with a turnover benefit yield of 36% per annum in energy savings… it would roughly take 3.5 years (scaled) to recoup the investment, when considered next to the same size investment for fixed panels.
