The dividing line between dupes and counterfeits is thin. While the former (legally) mimics the real thing, the latter (illegally) passes itself off as the real thing. Whether the consumer appreciates the difference is often unclear, but many Gen Z consumers are enthusiastic about dupes, not least for their affordability — a trend observed by the luxury sector through gritted teeth, fragrances have become the market's next target. Why are high-quality, unique perfumes becoming so expensive, some may ask? But what’s more important to consider is why so many people end up wearing the same perfumes. Even niche fragrances are at risk of becoming mainstream. Take the amazing Baccarat Rouge phenomenon by Francis Kurkdjian (RRP £220 for 35ml). Over time, these exquisite, high-priced fragrances become commonplace and highly recognisable, diminishing their niche appeal as more people wear them. Instead, the new standard of luxury is about offering a completely unique olfactory experience to every customer – as true luxury isn’t about the price tag but about crafting a unique, personal olfactory identity that is theirs alone. https://lnkd.in/dTN4zFJA #Fragrance #LuxuryPerfumery #NichePerfume

The niche perfume market has only been heating up over the past few year. Fendi re-entered the fragrance market with seven exclusive perfumes priced at $330 each, reflecting a shift towards high-end, niche fragrances in the industry. This trend sees designer brands like Fendi and mainstream brands increasing prices and emphasizing quality and exclusivity to compete with niche brands. Former indie pioneer BYREDO sold to Puig for a reported $1 billion in 2022. The likes of LVMH and Estée Lauder are looking to compete with those formerly indie darlings through scents that mimic niche perfume’s appeal, namely the promise of high-quality ingredients and more limited availability. #luxuryliving #luxurybeauty #luxuryfragrance #fragrance ##fendi #byredo #puig #lvmh #esteelauder #glossy https://lnkd.in/g3nsYWeV

Perfume ‘dupes’ are all the rage these days. But while they seem like a bargain, these imitations rarely measure up, both in terms of their quality and their ethics. Clearly consumers are looking for more affordable perfumes, but there are plenty of budget-friendly options on the market that don’t compromise quality and integrity for a quick profit. Dupes often rely on poor labour practices, unsustainable ingredients, non-recyclable packaging, and are fundamentally dishonest and damaging to creators. We don’t accept businesses stealing original designs in the fashion world, so why should it be tolerated in the fragrance industry? It’s time to see dupes for what they are and instead support the true art of perfumery at every price point. https://lnkd.in/dz73kX7H #Dupes #PerfumeEthics #Authenticity

All things luxury business :: Host of The Luxury Item podcast :: Adjunct professor in luxury marketing at NYU

Luxury brands that target status-loving but not necessarily wealthy consumers are struggling as these buyers rein in extravagant purchases. Hermès isn’t immune to the trend: Its perfume and makeup business grew at less than half the rate of the group overall in its latest quarter. But these entry-level products contribute less than 4% of total sales, and demand for its other products is strong." https://lnkd.in/eJXaeJBt

Is "more" really more, or are we overwhelming our customers? In recent years, niche fragrance brands have been expanding the industry olfactive choices with the introduction of broad collections of bold, daring scents designed to captivate even the most discerning consumers (see CARRARA advisory industry report). And, while some established brands have long embraced collection of fragrances, this trend is now gaining even more momentum. Key trends such as hyper-customization, gender fluidity, and the infusion of local and cultural influences are driving this change. However, we must consider the risk that too much choice could lead to confusion rather than satisfaction. At what point does offering more options leave customers feeling lost? https://lnkd.in/e9s6X-3a #beautyindustry #beauty #beautybusiness #fragrances #perfumes #marketresearch #insights #datainsights

💪 NOW TRENDING : Amouage, Matière Première, Guerlain, Les Eaux Primordiales, BDK parfums ... "Extraits de Parfum" : how to grow on a higly saturated and competitive market ? 💎 Niche brands are increasingly releasing "extrait de parfum" versions of their existing scents (or new fragrances) to meet growing demand for more intense, long-lasting fragrances. Customers seeking unique, high-end experiences are drawn to "extraits" because of their concentration and luxurious feel, which offers a more intimate and personalized scent experience. "Extraits de parfum" allow them to showcase the richness of their ingredients. These versions often highlight specific notes more intensely, offering a deeper interpretation of their original creations. As the niche fragrance market becomes more competitive, releasing "extrait" versions helps brands stand out. It offers an elevated, premium option that appeals to serious fragrance enthusiasts and collectors who are willing to invest in higher-end, exclusive products. For niche brands, offering an "extrait" version gives loyal customers a new way to engage with a fragrance they already love, deepening brand loyalty and encouraging repeat purchases. This trend is part of a broader movement in luxury perfumery where consumers are willing to pay more for distinct, high-quality scent experiences. #fragrance #market #industry #perfume #product #parfum #beauté #beauty
