The dividing line between dupes and counterfeits is thin. While the former (legally) mimics the real thing, the latter (illegally) passes itself off as the real thing. Whether the consumer appreciates the difference is often unclear, but many Gen Z consumers are enthusiastic about dupes, not least for their affordability — a trend observed by the luxury sector through gritted teeth, fragrances have become the market's next target. Why are high-quality, unique perfumes becoming so expensive, some may ask? But what’s more important to consider is why so many people end up wearing the same perfumes. Even niche fragrances are at risk of becoming mainstream. Take the amazing Baccarat Rouge phenomenon by Francis Kurkdjian (RRP £220 for 35ml). Over time, these exquisite, high-priced fragrances become commonplace and highly recognisable, diminishing their niche appeal as more people wear them. "Colours relate to emotions and can inspire the use of specific ingredients in fragrances. Fragrances inspired by Peach Fuzz often feature fruity, creamy notes, and floral or powdery accents like osmanthus and musk to convey the colour’s happiness and care," explains Siomara López San José, Scent Activator at Scentmate by dsm-firmenich. dsm-firmenich Perfumery & Ingredients embraced this #trend with the early 2024 launch of 'Peach Fuzz EDP' by Perfumers Siliang (Steve) GUO & Alexandra Monet. Over the next few weeks, I shall be doing a series on the aforementioned topic. What Is a Perfume Collection? A perfume collection, as its name implies, is a collection of scented items in a person’s possession. It is a personal selection of perfumes that reflects the individual's taste and preferences. This goes beyond liquid perfumes and includes scented candles, various creams, soaps etc. Different types of perfume collectors There are different types of perfume collectors. They include: 1. The Niche Enthusiast: Those who only collect the more expensive niche stuff e.g. Byredo, Chris Collins, Amouage, Creed, Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Roja Parfum, Nishane, Acqua di Parma, Mancera etc. 2. The Line Lovers: Those who want to collect everything from a particular fragrance line e.g. Creed, Tom Ford, Gucci, Estee Lauder, Giorgio Armani. Yves Saint Laurent, Guerlain etc. 3. The Brand Devotee: They only collect perfumes from a single brand that they are loyal to. 4. The Note Aficionados: They collect perfumes based on a single or combination of notes e.g. Vanilla, Citrus, Woody and spicy, floral etc. 5. The Trend chasers: People that go the trendy route and collect new and posh perfumes. 6. The Informed Collector: They collect based on gathered information and recommendations. All the notes that make your favourite fragrances are categorised into the above categories, based on their distinctive characteristics and relationship with one another. Here’s a quick lowdown on them: 1. Floral: Most commonly used notes for light and airy scents, especially women’s fragrances and occasionally men’s as well, with a powdery dry down.
