With 20-40% of the hydrogen electrolyser capacity turned into excess heat that needs to be cooled off and every 10MW electrolyser requiring 50-60m3/day of clean water, optimising the cooling process in an efficient, compact and scalable way is one of the key success factors for efficient and scalable green hydrogen production. By using the right technology, this excess heat can also be used to generate the right amount of purified water from salty or waste water, thus preserving scarce freshwater supplies, increasing the overall efficiency of the green hydrogen process and minimising the impact on the environment at the same time. HNO International. By Edward Laity US-based HNO International (HNOI) was thrust into the spotlight in January after its Compact Hydrogen Refuelling Station (CHRS) successfully refuelled a Toyota Mirai in Houston, Texas. Capable of refuelling both fuel cell electric (FCEV) and hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, the CHRS is expected to be a space-efficient system designed to generate, store and dispense fuel cell-grade hydrogen extracted via AEM electrolysis. Originally established as an electrolyser business, HNOI has recently shifted focus to both the production and distribution of hydrogen, creating a “unique approach” according to President and CEO, Paul Mueller. A new Rolls-Royce-led consortium is developing a stationary hydrogen combustion engine for combined heat and power (CHP) systems. Funded by the German government, the €5m Phoenix (Performance Hydrogen Engine for Industrial and X) project will aim to develop a highly efficient prototype capable of delivering carbon neutral heat and electricity with green hydrogen. Unique components that will need to be developed include the injection system, the piston group and the ignition system, plus a completely new lubricant. Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG will coordinate Phoenix, which also includes Robert Bosch Ag | Energy And Building Solutions, the Technical University of Munich, MAHLE Konzern, FUCHS LUBRICANTS GERMANY GmbH, and the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM). The consortium said it is looking to match the capabilities of existing gas-powered CHP units that can operate around the 2.5MW level.
