Have you heard about International Biodiversity Day 🌍? Every year, on the 22nd of May, the whole world takes a moment to think about the arising issues of biodiversity loss. In a world of rapid technological progress, it's essential to remember that our survival depends on healthy and diverse ecosystems. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘁? In December 2022, the world took a significant step by adopting the Kunming-Montreal Global Framework, known as the Biodiversity Plan. This global agreement sets concrete targets to halt and even reverse biodiversity loss by 2050. The United Nations "Be part of the plan" campaign calls on everyone - governments, municipalities, NGOs, companies, and citizens - to actively participate in implementing the plan. 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀? At Schneider Electric, we proudly support this initiative and reaffirm our commitment to zero net loss of biodiversity at our sites by 2030. To achieve this goal: ▪️ We regularly measure and publish our ecological footprint. ▪️ We implement conservation and restoration plans at all our sites and take measures to conserve water in water-scarce areas. ▪️ We have also introduced a new commitment: We aim to source 100% wood without deforestation. We believe this commitment can reduce our impact on land use related to wood. With the start of #Bloom24, I’m excited to announce our first State of Biodiversity report! What I love most about my job is focusing on the people and teams behind the work. This report is more than data. It’s a story told by the people who collectively have the power to create tremendous change. And their messages are loud and clear: - We’re making progress, but have a LONG way to go. - The individuals doing this work don’t need convincing, what they need is capacity. More staff with ecological knowledge, more $$, greater buy-in. - We need to continually make the case for nature as a business priority and as a key tool for climate resilience.

What are #biodiversity credits, and how can they help save the Earth’s ecosystems? Biodiversity credits are somewhat similar to carbon credits – they exist for polluters to compensate for the damage they have done. However, with biodiversity, things are more complicated. Biodiversity credits are less predictable and involve longer contracts (https://lnkd.in/epyGwKGW). Additionally, there is no international marketplace for trading biodiversity credits. Does this mean biodiversity credits are useless? The report “Biodiversity Credits: A Guide to Support Early Use with High Integrity” (https://lnkd.in/eB_3uyhX), developed by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with McKinsey & Company, explores the potential of biodiversity credits. Notably, the report provides four potential use cases for biodiversity credits: 1⃣ Enhancing Carbon Credits: Integrating biodiversity benefits into carbon credits to achieve broader environmental goals. 2⃣ Accessing Ecosystem Services: Utilizing biodiversity credits to protect and enhance ecosystem services like pollination, water purification, and soil health. 3⃣ Contributing to Nature Recovery: Employing biodiversity credits for restoring and conserving natural habitats and species. 4⃣ Bundling with Products: Offering products that contribute to biodiversity recovery, which is appealing to environmentally conscious consumers. The report's authors admit that the concept of biodiversity credits is still in its early stages. New study just released which should be of interest for those involved in #naturebasedsolutions and #biodiversitymatters. One often reads or hears that Humans are 100% dependent on Nature. Based on this report, if we take 100%, then close to 60% of our Biodiversity Needs to be managed in line with meeting People's needs. However, as per the report below it states the following; We find that we can safeguard 90% of nature's contributions to people and meet biodiversity targets by strategically conserving or sustainably managing 49% of global land area. However, 37% of these essential areas overlap with zones of high development potential. It's pretty obvious as many have already claimed that #30x30 is not sufficient It's also critical in meeting #netzero2050 as the biggest assumption from the #IPCC is based on Nature to be able to sequester most if not all of Human Caused CO2 emissions. For #businesses its imperative or should I say critical to partner with companies that are active in nature-based solutions. For #governments, it's critical to collaborate and factor in Biodiversity planning in relation to development. #wealth perhaps will be defined in terms of a healthy ecosystems in the future to meet humanity's needs while it stays within #planetaryboundaries https://lnkd.in/gRPCxaG3 #climatechange #planning

"Nature Positive: Guidelines for the Transition in Cities is published by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with Oliver Wyman. It is part of the World Economic Forum’s Nature-Positive Transitions report series that outlines the different pathways to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030 – the mission at the heart of the Global Biodiversity Framework. The series consists of two parts: sector transitions and city transitions. These reports highlight the relevance of nature-related risks, identify the impacts and dependencies of the economy and society on nature, and provide guidelines for city and business leaders on key actions to accelerate the nature-positive transition. A vibrant, thriving natural world is essential for the health of people, the economy and the planet. In December 2022, 196 countries agreed to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by signing the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), an agreement setting global goals for the sustainable use of biodiversity by 2030, and thoroughly safeguarding it in the years that follow. [...] In the context of valuable yet fragmented efforts by cities to safeguard biodiversity, this report aims to provide clarity on the strides of the global biodiversity agenda and support local governments and businesses in understanding their role as positive agents of change." The urgency to reduce the biodiversity footprint of businesses. “It is not a data revolution, it is not a tech revolution, it is not an organizational revolution that we are aiming at. It’s a cultural revolution” said our board member Stefanie Hauer to summarize what needs to happen to move towards nature positivity. Looking back at ChangeNOW Summit, as NatureRe Capital AG Partner and Board Member Stefanie Hauer took the stage alongside Geraldine Vallejo, Sustainability Programme Director at Kering and Arthur Campredon, Director Biodiversity Footprint Measurement at CDC Biodiversité to discuss the topic of “Reducing the Biodiversity Footprint of Business.” In the wake of ongoing environmental challenges, it's becoming increasingly imperative for businesses to recognize their role in #preserving #biodiversity. Businesses, as significant players in the global economy, wield considerable influence over environmental outcomes. It's not just about monitoring their activities; it's about integrating sustainability into every facet of their operations, including accounting practices. As Geraldine rightly points out, introducing concepts such as “environmental profit and losses” can be a game-changer. By quantifying the impact of business activities on biodiversity, we gain invaluable insights that can inform more responsible decision-making and by investing in nature, we build resilience in supply chains. However, it's not enough to simply reduce harm; we must strive to be nature-positive and reverse some of the damage that has been done. We must be creative in our leadership and re-design the economy to make it circular. As Stefanie clearly states “Stop extracting resources and start managing them.” At NatureRe, we invest in #ecosystem #restoration. By actively restoring degraded ecosystems and reintroducing native species, we can contribute to the regeneration of biodiversity and ecosystem services. “We do not plant trees at scale. It's Earth Day and we want to spotlight biodiversity.   "The fact is that no species has ever had such wholesale control over everything on Earth, living or dead, as we now have. That lays upon us, whether we like it or not, an awesome responsibility. In our hands now lies not only our own future, but that of all other living creatures with whom we share the Earth." - David Attenborough🌍   It's important to recognise the impact that organisations have on biodiversity. The concept of supply chain biodiversity footprint is a vital aspect that businesses need to consider in their operations. As highlighted by the World Economic Forum (WEF), over half of the global gross domestic product is reliant on nature [1]. Research from the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative reveals that 13 out of the 18 sectors constituting the FTSE 100, totaling US$1.6 trillion in market capitalisation, are linked to production processes with high or very high material dependence on nature [2]. These findings indicate that approximately one in five companies may encounter considerable operational risks due to the breakdown of ecosystems. Understanding the impact of economic activities on biodiversity is essential for businesses to make informed decisions and take responsible action towards preserving and enhancing the natural environment. By quantifying the extent of biodiversity change resulting from supply chain activities, businesses can find out the areas posing the greatest threat to biodiversity.
