The adequate earthing of high voltage systems is crucial for ensuring safety compliance and efficient system operation. Soil resistivity plays a key role in guaranteeing that the earthing system is appropriately designed. Field data on soil resistivity is gathered through the measurement of ground conductivity. Following the acquisition of this field data, it is imperative to accurately determine the soil structure. Last week another milestone in my scientific journey was completed. I was successfully confirmed as a doctoral candidate for my research “Sustainable removal of microplastics from stormwater using bioretention system”. I utilized my previous 10 years’ experience in civil and water engineering to bridge the gap between scientific research and real-world engineering for solving one of the most important current #environmental_issues. My study aims to enhance our understanding of microplastics (MPs) in terrestrial environments, with a special focus on soil and bioretention systems designed to filter stormwater. Given that stormwater runoff is a key pathway which MPs find their way into lakes and oceans, my research underscores the need for precise measurement of MPs to refine #stormwater_management_strategies. Moreover, I am working on developing stronger scientific techniques and gathering the data necessary to support the creation of better #regulations for controlling #microplastic_pollution in both soil and #stormwater_management systems. Exciting news! It’s been a month since I joined the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at Colorado School of Mines as a Postdoctoral Researcher, focusing on the intersection of asphalt pavement and PFAS contamination. 🌍🏗️ PFAS, often referred to as "forever chemicals," have been widely used due to their stability and resistance to degradation. However, their persistence in the environment has led to significant global contamination challenges, especially in the U.S. and Europe. The contamination of asphalt in airports, fire stations, and other infrastructure is a key concern, making it critical to explore effective management strategies for these materials. At Mines, I am applying my PhD expertise in Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) to study the leaching potential of PFAS through recycled asphalt pavements. By incorporating amendments into RAP, we aim to prevent PFAS from leaching into groundwater, helping to address one of the pressing environmental issues of our time. This project bridges disciplines, bringing together expertise in asphalt technology, environmental science, and public health.
