ETH Zürich "In the past decade, humanity has seen the birth and expansion of a #commercial #spacesector with new, #private #players, addressing technological challenges - from #space #launch to #communication & #satelliteimagery of Earth. Last year, the #global #spaceindustry skyrocketed launching more than 2,660* #satellites into orbit, and, into the universe, interplanetary probes, landers, and much more. In the #UnitedStates, #SpaceX was responsible for almost 90% of these launches. In parallel to this #progression is the #expansion of more than 70 countries** demonstrating #spacecapabilities. It affirms the general #consensus & understanding that humanity will continue to rely on #spaceactivities to better the human experience. These developments create a novel landscape of both #competition & #collaboration for #scientists, offering both #challenges & #opportunities. In an increasingly #fragmentedWorld, the #scientificCommunity stands as an example of #successful #international #collaboration & diplomacy. #Science is based in a long-standing tradition of #knowledge #exchange that often transcends political boundaries for the benefit of all humanity. Cost-effective, #commercial #spacetechnologies can enable #novel #research or reduce the #cost of investigations opening new possibilities for the scientific community. At the same time, international #partnerships can further broaden engagement, diversity, and collaboration in science & #spaceExploration. While this might seem like a “#WinWin” scenario, the interest of the scientific community is to openly share data & analysis. Differing principles & ideals present potential areas of conflict. As governments & private entities fund bold, new projects, leaders, academics, & legal experts are contemplating both the larger consequences, as well as potential prospects. I feel like a Space Queen now. We just delivered the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) Engineering Development Unit 1 to NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center for optical testing. Launching in 2035, LISA will be the first space-based gravitational wave observatory orbiting the sun, helping scientists see into previously invisible corners of space and detect major astrological events that have shaped our universe. The level of complexity and precision required to detect gravitational wave signals is what makes LISA so ambitious. In collaboration with the European Space Agency - ESA and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, we’re designing the telescope according to a very demanding set of requirements, including extreme resiliency to thermal changes due to the telescope's proximity to the sun. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙁𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 NASA’s future will continue to be a story of human exploration, technology, and science. We will go back to the Moon to learn more about what it will take to support human exploration to Mars and beyond. We will continue to nurture the development of a vibrant low-Earth orbit economy that builds on the work done to date by the International Space Station. NASA engineers will develop new technologies to improve air transport at home and meet the challenges of advanced space exploration. Our scientists will work to increase an understanding of our planet and our place in the universe. We will continue to try to answer the question, “Are we alone?” Unlike the way the space program started, NASA will not be racing a competitor. Rather, we will build upon the community of industrial, international, and academic partnerships forged for the space station. Commercial companies will play an increasing role in the space industry: launching rockets and satellites, transporting cargo and crew, building infrastructure in low-Earth orbit. NASA will continue to be a global leader in scientific discovery, fostering opportunities to turn new knowledge into things that improve life here on Earth.

This is awesome > one of the biggest sources of uncertainty in SOC (and really any biogeochemical modeling, particularly at field-level) is the granularity and ability to obtain good evapotranspiration data to parameterize and calibrate these models. It’s an accumulation of breakthroughs like this, amongst many other efforts, that are cumulatively decreasing uncertainty, reducing risk for participants, and unlocking growth of market-mechanisms that recognize and value natural capital resources with accuracy and accountability. #openscience #incrementalgrowth #naturalcapital

"Welcome to the moon." After a few tense minutes on a video feed from NASA and Intuitive Machines, Embry-Riddle alumnus Steve Altemus ('87) confirmed that the IM-1 mission landed on the moon. It is the first commercial craft to successfully land on the moon and the first U.S. lander to reach the moon since the Apollo program.
