MacKenzie Scott’s giving has diverged from more common approaches in philanthropy, earning both praise and critique. With new data in year two of a three-year study, CEP further analyzes the effects and emerging impacts of these gifts. The report examines: to what extent Scott’s giving has influenced other funders’ approaches; whether nonprofits believe the grant increased their impact, and in what ways; how they have allocated the money; and whether they have experienced any unintended negative consequences. Did you know that less than 2% of philanthropic contributions (in the US) are directed towards #girlsandwomen organisations? At $ 8.8 billion, the pandemic saw a 9.2% increase in philanthropic giving to girls and women organisations, yet this figure is so low. #Reproductivehealth and #familyplanning organisations received the greatest amount of philanthropic support and some subsectors such as women’s and girls’ arts and culture, and women’s and #girlseducation received an unexpected boost in charitable giving from 2019 to 2020. This growth may be explained in part by the influence of a few large donations on relatively small areas of #philanthropy.
